Show Thursday. July 24, 2008 SPRING VILLE HERALD 13 SMPPITS of SpringviUo History Helen Beardall This column comes again from notes out of the "Do You Remember" column published in the Spring-ville Spring-ville Herald and written by Maud Hatch Benedict. I appreciate her writings and would like to share with you. . "December 1941--Tp-day we found, among old magazines in a trunk, a 1905 Sears Roebuck catalog!. cata-log!. What a find! Within its pages is almost a history of the United States, because be-cause it embodies so much the essence of that history, vividly contrasting the old America with the new America that was coming out at the time. White duck emigrant wagon covers, . for instance, along the next pages, washing machines and other labor-saying devices. de-vices. Throughout the pages of the catalog, as in pages of American history, one is awestruck at the swiftness of change by the youth of the country, and by the spectacle of men who were boys in pioneer society, soci-ety, contributing, in their maturity, to urbanized, industrialized America. The catalog as the years flashed by shows American Ameri-can life changing, as we turn the pages. We remember when wood was sawed by hand, then by power saws; wa ter, hand pumped, now piped to the barns and corrals; cor-rals; men followed plows down the furrows for ages, and suddenly they are riding rid-ing steel-saddled gasoline tractors. The change, too, in the attitude toward reading; cosmetics, the virtues of fresh air (and do you remember re-member how we were worried of 'night air' being bad for one)? and of the time the Saturday night bath became the daily one; the pleasure of outdoor sports for women; how the luxuries of past generations genera-tions became the necessities necessi-ties of this generation; how the clothing of the middle class changed to be equal in beauty of cut and material mate-rial to that of 'Mrs. John Astorbilt?' And do you remember some of the books listed for sale in the 1905 era? "He Fell In Love With His Wife," by E.P. Roe, and "Near to Nature's Heart," by the same author? Sir Walter. Scott's books, too, were widely read those days-even Thackeray's "Vanity Fair" was not recommended rec-ommended for the very young! "Won by Waiting" was another popular novel of the day-and memory reminds us forcibly of how our mother despised those books which she called "trash," and perhaps some of them were, but com- West Nile Virus detected in Utah Comtymosquitos mmmmtmtmmmmw BiiaiMWMwaiaaa. s urn 1 li i I f r : - . .;;;t'7t We pay your first 3 mortgage payments when you buy a home from COUNTRYSIDE ESTATES Countryside Estates in Santaquin, Utah, Only 15 minutes south of Provo scenic east bench location - multiple floorplans to choose from - many custom features and amenities starting from the mid $200's Call for more information on our current deals and incentives and to visit our model homes, jgss WW W WW STRATFIELD www.stratfieldhomes.com m. 410 South 450 West Springville, Utah 84663 QA1 -AQCLCI&7A Dr. Harold Judd Davis D.V.M. (Skip forward to 2008 from 1941 and the novels now. TRASH!) We' used to take our awful novels to bed, hidden under the mattress mat-tress and at the first streak of dawn, strain thefeye to read a few chapters before the household began to stir. . We used to be suddenly roused from our thrilling romance in the story by mother calling us to wash the dishes! Wash the dishes! dish-es! Could anything be my incongruous--just at the lovely moment when his arms were about her and . her eyes drinking in his very soul! The awful "let down"--expressed better in today's to-day's slang-"like a deflated deflat-ed tire." Our family literally "ate up" reading matter; we read from babyhood to "still do" not that we absorbed ab-sorbed much of it, but it had a strong lure for each of us. We remember reading "Black Beauty," "Buffalo Bill," "Ivanhoe," 'fAunt Diana," Di-ana," "An Unwilling Bride" and "Lebna Locke." Considering Con-sidering the lack of libraries librar-ies those days, it is amazing amaz-ing how many books came into our homes. ' ; There were no. books on sex in the 1905 catalog-but in 1928 these were coming out loudly and were best sellers all over the country. But in 1905 such books as "Science of Life" and "Creative "Cre-ative Life" are listed as a sort of medical guide. In 1905 women's clubs were frowned upon and even Grover Cleveland, ex-president of the United States, wrote in the Ladies Home Journal, 'I am persuaded per-suaded that there are women's wom-en's clubs whose objects and intents are not only harmful in a direct way that menaces the integrity integ-rity of our homes: women should stay in the home. I believe the best and safest club for women should be her own home.! Well, times indeed have changed and who can say whether we are better or worse off than those of the past generations? The times in which we live certainly are faster, yet many of us are rushing rush-ing to an untimely death because we never relax; we run on schedule, we eat on schedule, or not at all, and why the haste? No one knows-but he knows he is urged on at top speed--whither?" As we reflect on today's world, the books that are being published, "Harry Potter" for instance, the wonderful libraries we have in our midst, we are blessed, but how about the rush to the soccer games, baseball games, all the activities our kids are engaged en-gaged in, how do we meet our schedules??? Rush here and rush there. How relaxed are you? Read a good novel lately, or is TV the No. 1 most important item? Write your thoughts pertaining per-taining to this day and age and preserve them for the up and coming generation. It will be most important eventually, both to them and to YOU! SHARE! "We are now doing testing test-ing of mosquito pools in Utah County," said Bob Mower, Mosquito Abatement Abate-ment Division director. "It just reminds re-minds us to take precautions precau-tions to protect ourselves and our families." Mower said that while spraying by Utah County Mosquito Abatement staff does help reduce the number num-ber of mosquitos in an area, personal vigilance is the key to preventing spread of the virus.
