As the end of the millenium nears, it gives alt of us the opportunity to realize what we have achieved and to be thankful for what we have. Many people along with myself fear for what the year 2000 may brine. The rumors of We people. where the end of the world will start, the shortages of food and mmmm power, etc. make me reassess what is truly important to me. Some people are going to Las Vegas for the new year and others oth-ers may stay at home and cuddle up by the fire and watch the ball drop from New York. Whatever your plans may be, please take the time to consider your actions. Jans will fund student art workshop Submitted by Suzanne McAdams MCPOLIN PR LIAISON The fourth-grade students at McPolin elementary School will be treated to an extraordinary artist-in-residence program, thanks to the generosity of Jans Mountain Outfitters. As part of their curriculum on statewide ecology and habitats, the students have been studying fish found in Utah's rivers. The funding from Jans will make it possible to continue to bring Briant Matheson (aka "The Fishman") back to conduct his fish art workshop in January 2000. Liz Sharp, marketing director for Jans, indicated that Jans supports sup-ports the community in many ways and the funding of this school program is particularly applicable because of the shared interest in local fish and stream ecology. This is the third year Matheson has taught the workshop work-shop at McPolin and the first time that it has been underwritten underwrit-ten by a local business. The 10-day workshop will culminate cul-minate in the creation of a papier mache fish sculpture by each student. stu-dent. In addition to Utah fish species of coho salmon and cutthroat, cut-throat, brown, rainbow and brook trout, students may choose to sculpt sockeye salmon, whales, dolphins or sea turtles. For an hour of class time each day, Matheson directs the students stu-dents in the design and creation of their projects, infusing scientific scien-tific lessons such as anatomy, stream ecology, origins of local fish and problems facing trout in western rivers into his teaching. Matheson has taught the fish art workshop in over 120 sites throughout Utah and "finds teaching the program at McPolin especially gratifying since he has been a resident of Park City for the last eight years. He is a self-taught self-taught artist with more than 25 years experience. His educational education-al background is in children's literature lit-erature and tractor technology but his artistic instincts surfaced early in his life. He was inspired to create his first fish sculpture in 1980 after fly-fishing for brook trout in Idaho. For the past two years he has concentrated on whales, dolphins dol-phins and sea turtles and most recently has chosen scarabs and dragonflies as the subject of his creations. Matheson's work can be seen at the Kimball Art Gallery from you II never regret. Get your Real Estate license right here in Park City! Evening & Weekend classes now available. He became a teacher through Artists in Education, a federalstate-funded program of the Utah Arts Council. To show appreciation for Jans donation, Matheson will assist the students in creating six fish sculptures representing all trout and salmon species covered in the workshop. These creations will be given to Jans for permanent perma-nent display in their fly-fishing section of the store. In addition, children will have the opportunity to display their individual creations in the store in the spring when the flyfishing fly-fishing season officially begins. Parents of students and the community at large are encouraged encour-aged to show their appreciation of Jans gift to McPolin when shopping for the holidays or for any sporting occasion. t J visa POOR C( |
