Sharpen your edges and skiing skills Deer Valley offers specialty clinics Working hard to remain on the "cutting edge" of the latest and greatest in ski instruction, technique, tech-nique, trends and equipment, Deer Valley has unveiled two new specialty clinics. Targeting a diversity of skier types, the resort's ski school is offering the "Super Carve" and "Turn It Up" performance clinics. "Sometimes experienced skiers get in a slump," says Sal Kaio, beer Valley Resort director of skier services. "We've designed several new clinics this year to get people excited about improving their skiing." Raio said that the ebb and flow of clinics is based on guest demand and the resort's unique resources. The Super Carve clinic is designed to help skiers break free from the constraints of traditional skiing techniques by using super carving, shaped skis such as Head's "Easy Carve Cyclone," which are 140-160 Cm in length, with lifted bindings. "Rotating, banking and carving with both skis, without poles, will change your perception of the sport," says Raio. The resort has hired a Swiss ski instructor to train the staff in the sport of super carving. The resort is also a natural place to teach the new technique because of the quality grooming and wide slopes. "You can really let it all hang out and just have fun in this workshop," work-shop," Raio added. The Super Carve clinics are offered three consecutive Tuesdays, Jan. 11, 18 and 25 from 1-4 p.m. The Turn It Up performance clinic is designed to help skiers master skills they hadn't dreamed of, ski terrain they hadn't dared, and elevate performance utilizing today's latest equipment. . ' "What makes this clinic different differ-ent from a ski lesson is the equipment equip-ment assessment and footbed evaluation," says John Guay, Deer Valley ski school manager. "Even if you have good equipment, equip-ment, it might not be great for your body weight. We focus on alignment, stance and balance," Guay said by the time you finish fin-ish your lesson, you will know your body's in harmony with your equipment, which makes a huge difference. ' The Turn It Up clinics are offered for skiers on three consecutive consec-utive Thursdays, Jan. 13, 20 and 27 from 1-4 p.m. Drop shots 5p y- t t 'y' - V ' ' f - ' W.. . . , The Smart Volleyer by WeVrten Prtoriu USPTA Master Professional I have watched many club players go for broke on their first volley because they are afraid of having a passing shot hit by them. They end up hitting a high risk volley to prevent something that hasn't even happened! The fact is, a passing shot is one of the most difficult shots in tennis. A good net player covers 60 percent of his court space. To hit to the "open" 40 percent, the baseliner still has to overcome the highest part of the net on a down the line shot, severe angle to hit a cross court pass, and the fact that THEY hud better hit a winner or lose the point, In reality, if you have good position at the net, the odds favor you, not the player hitting the passing shot. Here is a general rule of thumb that can make you into a better net player: Offensive volley: If you are positioned half way between the net and the service line, you are in an offensive net Eosition. Look to put away all igh balls (any ball higher than the top of the net at point of contact) con-tact) by angling them into the cross court service block of your opponent's court. Your objective is to put the volley away while maintaining offensive position at the net. Set up volley: If you are positioned posi-tioned anywhere else on the court, or you if you are faced with a low volley, ease your volley deep and down the line (at least deeper than the service line). Then move into the net to establish estab-lish an offensive position. Depth on this volley buys you fM$i v& M'& MV V m Best Wishes For a Happy Holiday Season Ami A Prosperous Millennium JULIE McKAY, CRS.CRI ASSOCIATE BROKER 800-SS3-4666 or 43S-647-8050 mekaylprucoleman.com Let my 1 5 yean of success work for you! Your objective on a set-up volley is to hit a high percentage shot that will enable you to gain offensive position. Good volleyers make high percentage per-centage plays. If you miss a volley, vol-ley, you are guaranteed of losing the point. Make the volley, and you may win the point. It is better bet-ter to lose a point by having someone hit a passing shot by you, than to give them a freebie by missing the volley.
