The squadron answered the letters off and on through the 1950s and 1960s. In the letterwriting became an annual holiday tradition, said Air Force TSgt. Carol Doolan, this year's coormid-1970- s, dinator. Last year, the squadron answered more than 5,000 letters. The squadron's 16 members are gearing up to time reading and answering letspend their ters. "The unit plans with friends and off-dut- famines," said Doolan. "We sit down and stuff as many of the letters as we can at a time, which is usually a couple of hundred." Doolan, a weather forecaster, said reading the letters tends to get one in the holiday spirit. The squadron has several generic letters signed by Santa that can be used. In addition, each child receives a picture in color. Letters must reach Eielson by Dec. 10 to make sure Santa's letter with the North Pole postmark is delivered on time. Letters received after that date will be mailed as quickly as possible, said Doolan. With late letters, the squadron will include a note explaining that Santa's elves have been extremely busy.
