Ho was born at Columbus, Miss., In 1851, nnd 20 yenrs later was graduated gradu-ated from tho University of Noshvllie. After studying law In Columbus university, uni-versity, tho University of Lolpslc, and in Paris ho was admitted to the bar In 1871. Ho rose rapidly In his pro-esslon. pro-esslon. Aftor retiring from the supremo su-premo bench of TenneBseo ho was from 1S95 to 1S07 assistant attorney gonoral of tho United States. At tho end of Presldont Cleveland's term ho resigned nnd ho then was made district dis-trict attorney for tho Loulfvlllo & Nnshvlllo railroad. In 1899 ho was appointed general solicitor of tho Illinois Central railroad rail-road and in 1001 ho was made gen-oral gen-oral counsel, both ofllccs then being consolidated. |
