Show BHS student wins state essay contest More than 40 high school students stu-dents from Bountiful and Monroe toured animal research facilities at the University of Utah Health Sciences Sci-ences Center April 7 as part of a contest award. Jason Green, a Bountiful High School student, and Tina Crowe and Chauntel Gilchrist, students at South Sevier High School in Richfield, Rich-field, won first, second and third places, respectively, in "The Price of Life," a statewide essay contest sponsored by Care-Utah (Committee (Commit-tee for Animals in Research and Education in Utah). For the contest, students were asked to write on the benefits of the proper use of animals in research to both humans and animals. Judges were Stanley Allen, DVM, director of the Utah State University Lab Animal Research Center; Max Wallentine, Ph.D., chairman of the Department of Animal Sciences and director of the Agricultural Station, Brigham Young University; Univer-sity; Jack Major, executive director, direc-tor, Utah Division of the American Heart Association; and Stacey Root, resource coordinator, Utah Arthritis Foundation. Other contest sponsors were: Utah State Medical Association, Utah Hospital Association and the Utah branch of the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science. CARE-Utah is a community organization composed of physicians, physi-cians, veterinarians, lawyers, educators, edu-cators, health-care organizations, pet owners and others who promote prom-ote the humane use of animals in research. |
