Show "PAY OR NO PAY!" Probably the last place to look for wit with any expectation of hearing its expression, ex-pression, is in the Territorial Legislature of Utah, now in session.' An incident occurred this morning that may be alleged al-leged to border upon the brilliant. The Mormon outfit on Assembling for the usual sit-out of a two hours' session to illustrate "how not to do it," were as a whole in a rather melancholy state of mind. Senator Cullom's resolution in the United States Senate relating to the per diem of these would-be-solons (the particulars par-ticulars of which ' were given in last Saturday's issue of the Democrat) struck these chaps ' just in the pit of the stomach. Not yet have they quite recovered breath. Before the morning session began, McLaughlin, of Summit county (the only Gentile in the Legislature) Legisla-ture) rallied the Chaplain upon being direlict to duty, of going off before the close of the session on Saturday last, and that Representative King had to put a holy period to their work in the Chaplain's Chap-lain's absence by pronouncing a benediction benedic-tion ; that the Chaplain -was sordid, aud a doubt of getting pay for his prayers had discouraged his piety," etc. Chaplain Hall declared solemnly he had to leave in order to catch a train and just then the members were called to order by the Speaker. The Chaplain took his place at once and proceeded to invoke Almighty Al-mighty assistance for the duties of the day, and in closing his prayer pleaded "for Divine grace for each member, wisdom wis-dom to discharge their whole duty, patience pa-tience to bear with the wiles of their numerous nu-merous adversaries, and to come off conquerors con-querors over all assailants, standing firmly and unwaveringly in their places on the walls of Zion, to defend it against all enemies from without or within, and to do all this manfully, pay or no pay ! !" An enthusiastic outburst of "Amen!" came from all parts of the house, and Speaker Rites sonorous voice added, "I fully concur." A roar of laughter followed this sally and continued into quite an encroachment of the morning hours. |
