Show CAUGHT ON THE FLY. A Smart JTevada Sheriff Picks Up George Q. Cannon in a Pullman , Sleeper. ; The Apostle's Trip to Honduras Stopped Short Tot to Go Again. j And Marshal Ireland Starts Back With i His Prisoner This Afternoon. i i After a year or more of successful hid-j hid-j ing in the fastnesses of "the underground" ! George Q. Cannon has at last been j gathered in by Marshal Ireland's effective ! net, and is at this hour securely held within the clutches of the law. The news boys last Friday evening had been heard I to sing out: or Democrat Ah. j about the capture of George Q. Cannon !" but this was only a bit of impudent enterprise en-terprise on the part of the "previous" urchins, and while it gave place to some idle rumors nobody paid much attention to it. It was never dreamed, however, even by those too sanguine newsboys, that another twenty-four hours would usher in the reality of what their reckless announcement expressed ; and among the betting classes large odds were offered during Saturday that Mr. Cannon would not be captured within thirty days. In one or two cases some of the "knowing ones," who were professedly on the inside track, took occasion to call on those who were known to be betting as above stated, assuring the parties that the bet was a safe one and offering to take a part of it. -In the face of all this and the sanguine assurances of the News and Herald that no "Iscariot" could be found, even though the reward should be made $5,000, word was communicated to Marshal Ireland Saturday Satur-day that the Central Pacific train which pulled out of Ogden Friday evening had on board the identical individual for whose apprehension the reward had just been offered. The information stated that George Q. Cannon, in company with ( Mayor Peery and others, was occupying the stateroom of the Pullman "Santa Clara," which had been attached to the West-bound train in a manner which was as successful in arousing suspicion as in affording what seemed to be the utmost exclusion to the little fugitive party. This word reached the Marshal shortly before 2 o'clock j'esterday faternoon, and he immediately wired Sheriff F. M. Fel lows, at Winnemucca, to have the train boarded and Cannon arrested. It is more than probable that the fated car had passed Winnemucca before this dispatch reached its destinationas the arrest was really made a number of miles beyond that point, at Humboldt House, and the fugitive brought back and placed in the custody of Sheriff Fellows immediately afterwards, as the following dispatches indicate: Winnemucca, Nev., Feb. 13. ToE.A Ireland, U. S. Marshal: Have got Camion in-custody. When will you come after him? F. M. Fellows, Sheriff. Reno Nev- Feb. 13. W. H. Dickson, Salt Lake, Utah : Cannon arrested at Humboldt House. Train just in. Ii. H. Ltndsay. Mr. R. II. Lindsay 13 a prominent lawyer at Reno who had been notified of the facts by Mr. Dickson, our prosecuting attorney, and who was requested bv the latter to come at once to Winnemucca j to take charge of the case when it should come before the court there. The Herald's Her-ald's talk of deputies having gone from I here and the necessity for a "requisition," etc., etc., is all so much nonsense, and shows both ignorance and recklessness. No deputies took a single step in this affair, the matter having-all been transacted trans-acted in a very few minutes over the wires, after the receipt of the letter disclosing dis-closing the facts ; and the absurdity of taking a requisition to. any part of the United States, in a case where th anv. ernment is itself the plaintiff, should be too evident- to need explaining to an'-body an'-body but McMurrin's guardians. Marshal Mar-shal Ireland and Mr. Dickson both did considerable telegraphing Saturday evening even-ing and yesterday, and among the latest dispatches sent was one instructing the sheriff at Winneinucca to start with Cannon Can-non yesterday if the latter consented to come without applying to the courts there. By this arrangement Marshal Ireland, who left here j'esterday in company com-pany with Captain Gresnman, would meet the party en route and accompany them back here, arriving by the noon train to-day. The fact that some hours after this telegram was sent one was received here inquiring whether Cannon were out on bonds from this court, was considered rather conclusive evidence that he had decided to make a fight for a writ of habeas corpus, and the additional fact that to-day's train failed to bring the party tends to confirm this. Mr. Dickson gives it as his opinion that such a writ cannot be obtained, and from the evident assurance with which the able attorney expressed it, the reporter was led to accept the judgment as final. All sorts of rumors were current yesterday yes-terday one that Joseph W. McMurrin was among the parties found in the state room of the "Santa Clara," but even if this should prove true, there is scarcely a probability that he, or in fact any of the others, if they have been indicted, would remain long enough to meet Ararahnl Ireland, and certainly they could not be compelled to do so. There is no doubt but George Q. Cannon Can-non is securely caged' behind the bars of Winnemucca's substantial jail, and that he cannot stave off his return to this city longer than a day or two at most. The indictment, warrant of arrest and whatever what-ever other papers may be required have been placed in Marshal Ireland's hands, and upon these it is expected that the court at Winnemucca will immediately guant order of transfer, which is all that will be desired and all that is needed. Knowing - how anxious the public would be to learn who the parties are ac companying cannon, the Democrat telegraphed tele-graphed to Winnemucca asking for particulars par-ticulars respecting the gentlemen, and in reply received the following : Winnemucca, Nev., February 14, 1880. To Democrat: Cannon was not disguised when arrested. His companions in the state room on the sleeper were: i 1,TA-Mnt five feet eight inches in height, light moustache, age about 35 years, : rather good looking. .No-2 Height Rl"it five feet nine inches, about 60 years of age, full gray beard, tnmmed rather close; wore dark clothes. No. 3 Gives the name of Arnold; height about five feet ten inches, lame in left lee. full beard. Here with Cannon. One of the others is named S. H. Hill. In the eveninff a telwrnun vna kuu; i j that $ 10,000 had been deposited in the ex-i ex-i press office at Salt Lake for Cannon, but the Marshal wants the Sheriff to hold him at all hazards. ... i The above descriptions establish beyond be-yond a reasonable doubt that Samuel II. Hill, of the Utah Central supply department, depart-ment, and Orson Arnold, superintendent of the Street Car Company, are with the party. It has since been learned that Mayor Peerv proceeded right on to San Francisco, and is at present pres-ent registered at the Rtlss House. Just who the "nice-looking" young man is, cannot be readily imagined, and the same obscurity shrouds the short gentleman gentle-man with a "full gray beard," although we are inclined to think this is Cannon himself. This afternoon it became be-came pretty generally believed that the wrong man had been captured, and a good deal of betting tended that way. Mr. Dickson himself became visibly affected by the rumor, but when at 3:30 this afternoon he received re-ceived the following dispatch, his face and that of Judge -Zane were radiant with smiles: Winnemucca, February 15, 188(5. W.H. Dickson : Cannon consents to come. We start in five minutes. O. K. I . E. A. Ireland, U. S. Marshal. - Before the above message came to hand the Democrat had wired for full particulars parti-culars respecting the person arrested, .as to whether it were Cannon or not, to which the courteous editor of the Silver State replied. To Democrat: Marshal Ireland has just left here with Cannon for Utah. Tha nris- onermade no attempt to get released on habeas corpus. Arrangements were made to have him arrested by the U. S. Marshal of this State if an attempt had been made to release him from oustody of Ireland on the ground of non-jurisdiction. The officers identified Cannon. Arnold, Ar-nold, who returned with Cannon when arrested, ar-rested, has left for California. Editor "Silver State." v |
