Show j THE FIRE ALARM TO-DAY. ! j A Blaze Near the Deseret Hospital, j Which TFIlght Have Been Worse. The city was aroused by the fire alarm at about 1 o'clock this afternoon, and thrown into consternation by the report that the Deseret Hospital, at the corner of First North and Second West streets, was on fire. Teams, foot travelers and bicycle perambulators caught the spirit of excitement and rushed from all directions direc-tions to the scene of the conflagration. The fire proved to be nothing more than the burning of a small barn and a $4 load of hay at the rear of the hospital, and belonging to that institution. The only live thing about the stable was a yearling pig, which got out without being singed and looked on during the firemen's fire-men's operations with as much interest as any spectator. Miss Jennie Whipple, the matron of the Deseret Hospital, said to the Democrat scribe that the barn was surely set on fire by some careless or malicious person, as she had just previously visited the place and observed no signs of any outbreak of flames. The loss is small, probably not over $100, but the little flame might have resulted in the total destruction of all the buildings adjoininj. j |
