Show j Coal in the Arctic Regions. Commenting on - Lieut. -Greely's dis-I dis-I covery of coal within the Arctic circle in Greenland, Mr. W. M. Williams expresses express-es himself as dissatisfied with the prevailing pre-vailing notion which demands a subtropical subtrop-ical climate for the formation of carboniferous carbon-iferous deposits. He has himself described de-scribed the deposition" of coal that is in actual progress at the present time in Norway, within 4 degrees of the Arctic ! circle, and believes that - similar deposits may be found much further north. No very violent alteration of climate, therefore, there-fore, need be assumed to explain the Greenland coal. |
