Show Hitting Em Hard. Another blow was struck at polygamy in Salt Lake, Tuesday, where Bishop Clawson, a prominent Mormon, was sentenced sen-tenced to pay a fine of $300 and to be imprisoned im-prisoned for six months the full penaltv for unlawful cohabitation. S. W. Sears, the manager of Zion's Co-operative Institution, Insti-tution, a Mormon of note, and Truman O. Angel Jr., an artificer of the temple, pleaded guilty, and on promising to obey the law hereafter, were let off with fines. The Saints cannot stand this sort of warfare war-fare upon their peculiar institution much longer. If by the time Congress meets, however, the doctrine of polygamy has not been abandoned by the church, the Edmunds' law should be so amended as to provide much heavier penalties. If the punishment instead of being six months' imprisonment and a fine of $300 were a term of years in the penitentiary, the problem of polygamy would soon be solved. S. F. Post, Sep. SOth. |
