Show Garfield and Ingersoll. . Garfield was a warm personal friend of Colonel Kobert G. Ingersoll. The latter and Garfield were in Garfield's room one night, having thrown the cares of business busi-ness and politics far aside, and Garfield, lying back on the bed, was listening while Ingersoll read Shakespeare. Ingersoll had just read a splendid passage in Hamlet Ham-let when he dropped the book at his side and said : "Ah ! Garfield, if people must have a Bible why don't they take Shakespeare. He depicted eyery phase of human nature as it is." - ' Garfield paused a moment and said : "Yes, he depicted human nature as it is, but Christ painted human nature as it should be." - |
