Show HAMILTON COUNTY. From present appearances the political complexion of the Ohio Legislature depends de-pends upon the result of the vote in Hamilton county. It is the most populous popu-lous county in the State and it seems to have gone Democratic, and already the Republicans are charging any amount of fraud against the Democrats. If fraud has been committed in Cincinnati by the Democrats and the Republicans are out, it will be a sort of offset - to last year, when Hamilton county went Republican Repub-lican for Blaine by a majority of 5,496, and the Democrats charged fraud against the Republicans. Cincinnati Cin-cinnati and Hamilton county are places in which the charge of fraud generally gen-erally has some foundation. Whether McLean is guilty of all that is charged -against him is very doubtful, but it would be well to remember that even today to-day some Republicans think that Cleveland Cleve-land carried New York last fall through fraud. Another thing that should not be forgotten is that the Associated Press dispatches dis-patches are highly partisan as a rule, and partisan on the Republican side. If all the statements about fraud in Hamilton county which are contained in a special I telegram to the Tribune of this city are true, then John McLean is entitled to the penitentiary, and to the -Rermbli- cans belong the election in Hamilton Hamil-ton county. But it is very doubtful whether these statements are true, they having coming from the New York Times, a very ultra-Republican paper. Certain it is now that nothing but an official count can determine to whom belongs Hamilton county, the Democrats or the Republicans.' John Sherman thinks that without Hamilton county the Legislature will be Republican, but it is quite safe to say that the way goes Hamilton county goes the Legislature. We hope that the Legislature in Ohio will be Democratic, but we would have it Democratic honestly honest-ly or not at all. |
