Show A Deserter Surrenders. Patrick Swan, says the San Francisco AUa-California of the 31st ult., surrendered surren-dered himself voluntarily to the United States Marshal as a self-proclaimed deserter de-serter from the army. Swan alleges that he deserted from the army in 1863, but has since served several terms of enlistment, enlist-ment, the last being in Company H, Thirteenth U. S. Infantry, at Fort Douglas, Salt - Lake City. A Deputy United States Marshal took Swan to the Presidio and placed him in charge of the officer of the guard. In consequence of his act, a general court-martial may sentence sen-tence Swan to a long imprisonment, although, al-though, as the desertion took place during dur-ing the Rebellion, the articles of war make such offenses punishable with death. The statutes of limitation may, however, intervene in his behalf. |
