Show LIGHT ON UTAH. The world needs light on Utah and her affairs, and Utah needs the light of the world. Steam and the telegraph have done, much to' spread intelligence, but steam and the telegraph cannot do everything every-thing unless people will use a little common com-mon sense. j In a recent issue, the Chicago Evening Journal contained the following in an editorial: At a Mormon conference held recently at' Logan, Utah, a singular . and sensational scene ocourred. While the meeting was in session, John Taylor and George Q. Cannon appeared in the presence of the audience, the first time that they have been publicly seen in the last six menths. During that time they have been in hiding to escape arrest by the officers of the United States law. They are notorious polygamists, and the Federal officerSj in the execution of the anti-polygamy act in Utah, have been anxious anx-ious to get hold of them. Thus far they have succeeded in avoiding arrest.- They reached the Logan conference under cover of night, and when their presence was made known, it was quite as much a surprise as a pleasure to the Mormons present. - They afterwards sneaked away from the meeting as secretly as they entered it. Anyone in Utah at all cognizant of matters will see the -absurdity of this at a glance. Mr. Taylor and Mr. Cannon may have been at Logan during the recent conference, but they were at none of the meetings, at least so as to be seen by the congregation. But this is not all the information concerning Utah conveyed con-veyed in the editorial referred to. The following bit of political history is entire ly new and truly astounding:. Mr. Cannon was formerly delegate in Congress Con-gress from Utah, but declined another election elec-tion a few years ago on account of the strong publio sentiment against the appearance appear-ance of polygamists in Congress. Mr. Cannon was formerly the Congressional Congres-sional Delegate from Utah, and was succeeded suc-ceeded by Mr. Caine, but Mr. Cannon did not decline "another election a few years ago, on account of the strong public pub-lic sentiment against the appearance of polygamists in Congress." There was such a sentiment against polygamists in Congress, but the sentiment was not strong enough to cause Mr. Cannon to decline de-cline another election. There is a good deal of declining in Utah. For example, the Republicans who are . in 'Federal offices decline to resign, and the polygamists polyga-mists when put upon the witness stand decline to answer. There are other declines in Utah, but they never go so far as to decline de-cline an election to Congress. '"It ain't natur, you know." |
