Show DEMOCRATS ENJOYING THE FUN. The dispatches tell us that in the Senate Sen-ate on Thursday last an understanding was arrived at by which Mr. Logan's army efficiency bill will ba taken up on Monday next immediately after the morning business, and its consideration continued from day to day until it is disposed dis-posed of. Our Eastern exchanges note the fact that this bill is meeting with much oppo- j sition from Republicans in the Senate, and the fight is hugely enjoyed by Democratic Demo-cratic Senators because it exposes the nature and extent of family quarrels among their Republican colleagues, demonstrating that jealousies are rankling rank-ling in the breasts of various aspirants for the Presidential nomination, and that unseen forces are being employed in cut ting the comb of the Illinois Senator. The opinion is freely expressed that the bill will fail of passage, through an alliance alli-ance of Republican with Democratic Senators. With a few exceptions, the sentiment of the Democrats is against incurring the expense incident to an . increase of the army, although some of the .remedial features of the Logan measure meet with approval. Every day the bill is discussed it loses strength, and the feeling is general gen-eral that, if money is to be expended in war -material;, it is better at this time to j apply it to the more needed purpose of placing our pregnable coast defenses on a footing commensurate with the advance in the art and practice of engines of war. Mr. Logan is represented as feeling very sore over the hostile attitude of his party colleagues toward his pet measure, and the indications are that a jolly row in the camp will ensue if the final vote shall show that its defeat is largely due to Republican opposition. |
