Post, have been received re-ceived by the Merchants' Exchange from United States Consul Greenebaum at Apia : Apia, Samoa, November 11, 1885. Manager Merchants' Exchange, San Francisco Fran-cisco Dear Sir : A new island was thrown up by the sea about forty miles this side of the Tonga Islands, bearing towards Fiji, in the track of California vessels. Expect the steamer Janet Nicol from Auckland, via Tonga, to-day, and, if possible, give you fur ther details.; I remain respectfully yours, B. Gbeenebaum, U. S. Consul. To the United States Consul, Apia Dear Sir : I have much pleasure in forwarding you the following particulars regarding the new island thrown up off the Celebrass shoal, and will kindly refer you to Lieutenant Bowell, Her British Majesty's Consul for Samoa, who was a passenger on board, and who took several photographs ef it. The ship's position was the west end of Houga Tonga, south by east, crater bearing west V4 miles magnetic. The island is about two miles long, north by west and south by east, estimated height 210 feet, sornded and found no -bottom at 100 fathoms, fath-oms, but a reef runs off the south end 1 miles, also off the north end a reef miles off. The position is laid off on the-hart Jy the above bearing is latitude 20, 28 S, longitude longi-tude 175, 21 W. I have the honor to be yours respectfully, '- ' - Master Stsameb Janet Nicol. ' |
