Show r > NOT OVER YET An Ominous Calm at Wood Kiver The Queen of the Hills Strike Mr J C Conklin retured on Tuesday night from a several weeks visit to Wood River and unburdened himself this morning in relation the condition of affairs at the Queen of the Hills mine Ths fact is said Mr Conklin that although everything is quiet and running smoothly now we regard the calm as rather ominous There are a great many idle Union men there and they are liable to create more trouble at any time The mine guarded by nine deputies day and night and we are prepared for anything that may occur A majority of the Union men are willing and anxious to return to work but are restrained by their leaders But we have no difficulty in procuring men and are workin a full force About forty of the Union men are under bonds several of them having been bound over three or four times In the conversation that ensued it was learned that drifting had commenced on the immense body of galena ore recently encountered in the lower winze This body of ore is six and a halt feet in thickness thick-ness but the present developments have not determined its full extent This ore nets 8060 per ton after paying freight and smelting charges The mill is in full operation and the shipments average one car per day The ore now goes to the Grant smelter at Denver The freight rates to that point are a little better than to Omaha |
