Show TIlE PARK Our city has done few things so worthy of praise as the purchase of Liberty Park Already it has become a place of popular resort and almost any afternoon there may be seen in it parties of happy picnickers pic-nickers It is much nearer than any of the places in the canyons around as it can be reached by the street cars and the shade is far superior to that of the near canyons It is also quiet and secluded and so far free from rowdyism The drive within the Park has already become more popular than what is known as the Drive and is kept in excellent condition but needs sprinkling sprink-ling occasionally The city has also made a strong effort to plant out a great number num-ber of trees of all varieties and time only can show in this direction A thing which remains to be done is the nlmtin 1 nno of some flower beds those things which lend to all such places grace and beauty To protect them and the entire Park too would require a regular keeper who above all things should be kind and courteous cour-teous but still firm and anxious for the general good of his charge Parks are things which give to those whose time or means will not permit an absence from the city during the hot months of summer a glimpse of nature a breath of pure cool air and a rest from the hum of business and the toils of life They give to the poor man who is compelled to remain at home that which the rich seek at seaside resorts or in mountain fastnesses They are a luxury which becomes a necessity to do without which is an injury to the community It would be far better for New York to dispense with her Broadway than be without her Central Park and she recognizes it But why cannot our city in a small way imitate Central Park and during one afternoon of each week hire a band to play in the Park It would be no great expense and the pleasure which the people would derive from it would more than compensate for the outlay If nature is our greatest educator so it may be said that music is the greatest refiner and softener of our civilization it elevates the soul and with the elevation of the soul there comes a higher and better ideal of life Let our city fathers but give us mnsic in the Park once a week and they will have conferred upon us a blessing for which all will be thankful Ve respectfully J > ask our city contemporaries to join us in this request at least to give us their view on the matter |
