Show I THE NEVADA LIARS The Most Prodigious on Earth A cow With Gold Plated Teeth Of all the liars on the face of the earth ve believe the Nevada newspaper liar is the most prodigious outside of Missouri and the newspaper men in that State all seem to be equally accomplished They also place a great deal of confidence in each other One of them will publish a wild imaginative yarn and every other paper in the State will reprint it After it has gone around the entire circle some other old duffer will start another fabulous tale and in this manner the public is constantly kept in a state of excitement ex-citement About a year ago one of these sensation originators related how a wonderful illuminating il-luminating shrub had been discovered in a remote locality This bush would emit a brilliant phosphorescent light after dark and could be seen for miles around arounc Some other fellow then told of an apparently ap-parently lottomless cavern that had been t discovered in Lake Tahoe which was i eclipsed by the subsequent announcement announce-ment that the cavern proved to be the extended jaws of a defunct fish We be lieve Dan De Quille was responsible for the startling discovery of a live alligator in i he Sutro tunnel but we forget who it I XlS that saw the twentyfoot trout in one r of the Nevada lakes The Carson Appeal 1 victimized a great many Eastern papers with the description of a novel vehicle patented by a Nevada man This wagon SI was so constructed that the horse traveled underneath it and was thus protected from the weather In going down hill 1 the wagon would pick the horse up and I carry him The latest lie is manufactured by Sam Davis who seems to be exceptionally prolific I is as follows Yesterday the Appeal received from Belleville the gold plated tooth of a cow which was killed for beef recently near Bishop Creek by Mr Goodwin a butcher of that vicinity The tooth is about two inches long and the portion below where the gums were is coated with gold except ex-cept the crown of the tooth which shows no gold except in two cavities This would naturally be the result of grinding the upper and lower teeth together The theory is that the cow got the gold plating plat-ing by drinking water which held gold in solution The cow had been for years feeding along the banks of Bishop Creek and its tributaries The letter accompanying accom-panying the tooth states that all of the teeth in the cows jaw j were covered with the metal The tooth was shown to Dr Southworth who said he did not believe that the metal had been placed there artificially His opinion was that it accumulated ac-cumulated through perhaps several years by being deposited froU gold held in solution |
