Show < BOGUS HISTORY 4 Budget of Political Corrected Misstatements I I II I EDITOR DEMOCRAT I read in the DEMOCRAT DEMO-CRAT of the 12th inst a short article credited cred-ited t the Boston Budget which considering its brevity contains more false statements than can be found usually in the columns of our greatest and best f Falsifiers Inasmuch as the DEMOCRAT has been stared with a view to teaching politics to our young men of Utah it is best to furnish them with correct political data in i order that they may be well posted in regard to that subject therefore byyour permission I will undertake briefly to I correct some of the mistakes or misstatements misstate-ments of the Bedgct This culchaed falsifier tells us that I James K Polk was the first man who was elected President a a distinctive Democrat All before 1844 were elected either as Federalists Republicans or Whigs That there was no party that claimed the name until the administration administra-tion of Jackson etc I All persons conversant with the history of parties in the United States excepting except-ing possibly the Boston editorare aware of the origin of such parties and it is only I necessary for me to refer to the facts I which follow And i stating these facts I shall quote from and draw on the B O Red Book published 1884 and which seems to have been gotten up with great care and is I believe regarded as accurate and reliable data This book says In 1832 both great parties inaugu I rated the National Convention system I which has been maintained since Prior to 1832 the nominations were made by Legislatures of States or by an understanding under-standing that each party would support candidates for President and VicePresi dent who from their distinguished services ser-vices were entitled to such honors Taking says the Red Book the AntiFederalist party of Jefferson Jeffer-son as the root of the present Democratic party it is followed down through the Republican Democratic party and the Jackson men in their different dif-ferent caucuses conventions etc The AntiFederalists supported Washington Wash-ington for President in 1792 The Republican Democrats supported Jefferson 1804 in 1796 and also in 1800 and in I I The Republicans supported James Madison in 1808 and in 1812 and in 1816 they supported James Monroe who also received their support in 1820 There were no nominations in 1824 the party being divided between Crawford Craw-ford and Jackson 1828 The Democrats by common consent con-sent supported Jackson In 1832 the Democratic National Convention Con-vention was held at Baltimore Andrew Jackson was nominated for President and Martin Van Buren for VicePresident and were elected In 1836 the same party held a convention conven-tion at Baltimore and Martin Van Buren was nominated for President and elected In 1840 the National Democratic Convention Con-vention was held at Baltimore and Martin Mar-tin Van Buren was nominated for President Presi-dent dentIn 1844 the National Democratic In-Con Convention was held at Baltimore and nom inated James K Polk for President From the foregoing glance at the vention-his I history of parties it will be seen that tory-in I instead of Polk being the first President elected by the antiFederalist party which I take for granted the Democratic party now is ever has been and I hope always will remain they have supported and elected to the Presidency prior to 1844 Jefferson Madison Monroe stead-Jack Jackson and VanBuren and subsequently Rubsequenty this grand old party elected Polk Pierce Buchanan Tilden and ClevelandH H D J I Below we reproduce the article to which our correspondent refers Democratic editors talk about Jefferson and Jackson a Democratic presidents but those political leaders called themselves them-selves Republicans and it would not have been safe to have called either one of them a Democrat to his face The truth is there was no party that laimed the name Democratic until after the adminis tration of General Jackson The calls cals for the county conventions in the State of New York in 1836 were addressed to the Republican electors The State committee com-mittee called a convention of Republican delegates See Albany Argus of May 121 1835 The leading editorial article reads Republican Legislative Address VR Inv tliis document hpfnro nnr rooJ ers today together with the proceedings of the meeting of the Republican mem bers of the Legislature to their constituents constitu-ents On the same page appears Address of the Republican members of the Legislature to their Constituents James K Polk was the first man who was elected to be President of the United States as a distinctive Democrat All before 1844 were elected either as Federalists Budget Feder-alists Republicans or whigs Boston |
