Show A RAILROAD CHOLERA CIRCULAR Superintendent oi tlc Union The I Pacific Issues Cfcansinsr Orders From the office of General Superintendent Super-intendent Smith of the Union Pacific Railroad the following circular in reference re-ference to cholera preventives has been issued In view of the probable appearance of cholera in this country attention is called to the necessity for a rigid enforcement of the Companys rules m regard to cleanliness and to the use of disinfectants and other preventative measures against disease The most important means of preventing disease is cleanliness cleanliness not only f the surroti of the person butn of surroundings no disinfectant can take its place All shops stations and adjacent grounds should be kept scrupulously clean and neat and decaying decay-ing animal and vegetable matter should be burned or buried PnVIes and water closets should be scrubbed with soap and water as often as once in two weeks drains and sewers should be freely flushed with water as often as once a week if the water supply will admit Passenger cars should be thoroughly cleaned and ventilated and the plush beaten frequently The closets and floors of passenger cars should be washed as often as once a week and the U P disinfectant disin-fectant used thereon according to the printed instructions furnished with each package Freight cars at stations should be cleaned before loading and if the refuse from the cars cannot be satisfactorily disposed dis-posed of otherwise it should be burned or buried Great care must be exercised in keeping the water supply for drinking and household house-hold use free from any contamination impure im-pure water being one of the most effective i means of generating and spreading disease Stockyards corrals privies and outlets of c drains are frequently so located that the drainage from them finds its way into the water supply hence when practicable springs where the highland surrounding them has pure drainage should be selected for this purpose In cases where water suspected of contamination is used for drinking of household purposes it should first be Boiled Garbage and rubbish near the water supply is a source of disease and should be removed burned or buried If a case of infectious disease is found at stations or elsewhere on the Companys I property a physician should be immediately Ir sent for if in cars such cars should be removed re-moved from the train as soon as practicable the doors locked and should not again be used until fumigated in accordance with the 3 printed instructions of the chief surgeon The following disinfectants are recommended recom-mended 1st U P disinfectant This disin fectant is applicable everywhere full directions for using will accompany each package and it will be furnished on requisition requisi-tion from Omaha Armstrong and Denver storehouses 2nd Sulphate of Iron or Copperas This is one of the best common disinfectants It is applicable in all places where iron stain is no detriment It should be used along the edge of drains sinks sewer connections and in wet places where there may be decavine animal or vegetable matter It must not bo used on fabrics floors or painted surfaces The best method of applying it is to dissolve dis-solve it in waterabout two pounds to the gallon and pour or sprinkle the liquid wherever wher-ever required 3rd Fresh lime is an excellent disin fectant and may be used freely to advantage in privyvaults cesspools and open drains either alone or in connection with other disinfectants 4th Refuse from telegraph battery forms a good disinfectant The residue should be mixed with common salt in the proportion of 1U pounds of salt to a gallon of residue This disinfectant maybe used everywhere in the same manner as the U P and in place of it 5th Ice is valuable in preventing decomposition decom-position and is a good disinfectant It may be used to advantage in passenger cars and other places where the supply will admit Lump ice should bo carried in the urinals of passenger cars while the car is in service All employes are expected to heartily cooperate co-operate in keeping the premises of the Company Com-pany clean and neat at all times Attention is called to Rules 130 and 145 of the General Regulations of the Company The General Storekeepers will provide the necessary to carry this order into effect S T SMITH I Gen Supt |
