Show c THAT CIRCULAR LETTER V ilch Was Furnished Fred flu boI by One of His mormon JLlcutenaiits The DEMOCRAT is in receipt of a letter dated at Boise City Idaho on the 9th L instant from Charles C Stevenson acting act-ing Secretary for the Democratic Central Committee of that Territory It is in i L relation to a letter published in the Salt Lake Tribune on the 8th instant which is being circulated as a campaign document docu-ment by Dubois and paraded in his Salt 3 Lake City organ as evidence of Mormon L affiliation with the Democratic party Mr Stevenson writes us the following plain statement of facts concerning the letter Jo Rich two years ago and ot course before the Test Oath law was enacted was placed on the Territorial Central Committee as a member from Oneida county Since that time the counties have been divided and the consequence was when the committee met last spring there was no member to represent repre-sent Oneida Jo Rich having moved to Bear Lake county The committee directed di-rected me to send letters to all of the counties which I did and sent one to I Mr Rich as being the old member from Oneida but of course then not acting as I he had l moved out of the county I did not Know wnu eibe lu HBIIU IL iu uuu naturally nat-urally sent it to the old member from Oneida The letter shows that there was no invitation given to the Mormons to cooperate co-operate with the Democrats nor any encouragement en-couragement for them to do so Rich sent the letter to W H Homer now of I Bingham county who gave it to Fred 1 Dubois The latter took or sent it to the Salt Lake Tribune which published an assertion that it had in its possession a letter from Governor Stevenson my father to the Mormons which showed that he was hand in glove with the members of that Church This was of course a falsehood both in regard to the author of the document and its con tents as is proven by the letter itself This W H Homer is a Mormon who declared de-clared himself atBellevue last September as believing in polygamy and asserted that he would not lake the test oath for anybody This is the man Duboishas to do his dirty work Does it not show who is seeking Mormon aid and support in this campaign The letter was percisely such a one as is usually issued prior to a political campaign cam-paign by a State or Territorial Committee to the different County Committees urg inir vigorous action the formation of clubs etc It did not contain line word or syllable which could possibly be construed con-strued into solicitation for Mormon sup port or cooperation The use to which it was put by Dubois only shows his scarcity of campaign material and his desperate strait for a little political ammunition am-munition The manner in which he ob tamed the harmless document however indicates that he tolerably solid with the Mormons That is the most significant fact developed in the entire affair The Secretarys complimentary remarks concerning con-cerning the DEMOCRAT and the assurance ol the approval of its course by its Idaho readers while exceedingly gratifying to us we refrain for obvious reasons from publishing |
