Show V U V r V WORKING FOR A LIViNG S President Cleveland Bringing Pub lic Employes to a Sciihc of Their l > tics Denver News April21 The good example set by President Cleveland in attending closely to the da ties of his office is having its effect ir Washington and it is only a question of time when a fair days work for a fail days pay will be the rule in ail the Federal offices of the country Speaking of the change already noticeable in Wash ington the Missouri Republican says The statement in our AVashington di patches published yesterday respecting the general activity in the government departments and the genuine hard work now being performed by the host of officers offi-cers clerks and employes is a forcible illustration of some of the national bene fits incident to a Democratic ministra tmomi President Cleveland clear prac wal decided way of doing business has imparted a new influence to official life in Washington Government officers and their subordinates have been made to un derstand that stern and vigilant eyes are watching their methods and the results of their services They know that the President Pres-ident and the members of his Cabinet are opposed to slow and indolent habits that they see no necessity why the government gov-ernment business should always be in arrears that they believe the official force of the departments is sufficient to transact the current business and are determined de-termined that an honest days work must be done for each days pay This kind of spirit at headquarters has exercised a wonderful effect The mixed multitude of Washington clerics has been thrilled with a new emotion viz i that of industry indus-try An ominous suspicion that they may lose their places if they continue their old leisurely methods has had an awakening power and they have gone to work at last with energy to clear up their desks and cancel the arrears which under Radical rule were allowed to accumulate without reproof Hard honest work in Washington departments is a practical reform which will make its benefits felt in all branches of public business besides it will save public moneys from being wasted Under Republican rule government officials and clerks were affected by the corrupt political ideas of the party in power and the infection showed itself not only in partisan schemes and official intriguing but also in neglect of public duty and of > the ordinary principles of business All this is now being rectified is passing away and there is some prospect of the government getting the worth of the money it pays out for official services We are well aware that Presi dentClevelands personal character and influence in-fluence have accomplished much in bringing bring-ing about this practical reform but it would be unjust to the great party he represents to attribute it wholly to him The Democratic party has always represented repre-sented economy reform and practical I ideas Its elevation to power was certain I cer-tain to effect improvement in the management manage-ment of public affairs to purge away old corruptions and to introduce activity energy integrity in the public service What Mr Cleveland and his colleagues in the administration have accomplished towards these objects is only what their part stood pledged to perform They are simply doing the duty which was expected ex-pected of them and to neglect which would have been a betrayal of the trust reposed in them The public benefits of the Democratic victory last November are becoming more vividly apparent to the country every day The practical reform in the spirit of officials at Washington Wash-ington is i one of these benefits and others l more substantial and enduring will soon be evident in many different directions Of course the reform involved in securing secur-ing honest service in return for federal salaries will never be complete until the Republican incumbents who were given office as a reward for partisan services rendered or expected are turned out and their places are filled by i honest and competent Democrats who have acquired I the fixed habit of working hard for a living Turn the lazy rascals out |
