Show THE DEMOCRATIC WAY Governor Hill the Democratic veto Governor of New York is as unbending unbend-ing in his rectitude of official purpose as devoted to public duty and as sternly guardant of the dignity of his high office as President Cleveland himself Referring Refer-ring to the impudent and interested letter let-ter of exSenator Platt Governor Hill said the other day I cannot with propriety pro-priety take official notice of this letter The Executive of the State cannot enter into a bargain with the Commissioner Commis-sioner of Quarantine or any other official as to who would be appointed ap-pointed his successor in the event of his resignation If Mr Platt sincerely desires to resign his resignation resigna-tion must be unconditional and without promises on my part And further after Mr Platt has actually resigned it will be ample time for him to offer suggestions sug-gestions as to his successor Truly modern Democracy is breeding a race of officeholders long foreign to American soil Here we have the Governor Gov-ernor of a State who desires only that his office may be administered with honesty and dignity He wants no political bargains and says so with unmistakable emphasis taking occasion at the same time to as unmistakeably rebuke the impudent and venal bargainer With Cleveland and Hill as the vanguard of the politicians of Democracy and the future the people have nothing to fear and everything to hope |
