Show > In Memory of Immortal Perry I NEWPORT It I September IThe ceremony cere-mony of laying the comer stone of the statue j to the memory of Commander Oliver Hazard Perry of Lake Erie fame > s performed this morning with all the pomp and ritual of i Ihe Grand Lodge of Masons The statue is now beside the base and will be placed in position tomorrow The entire height of the statue and base is 28 feet The base is of the best Westerly granite On one side is the simple word Perry and on the reverse I the wellknown sentence first heard on Lake I Erie in 1813 We have met tho enemy and they are burs The lower tier of the base is divided into four sections while the top tier is square and inpne block The figure of the statue itself is very striking strik-ing It represents the naval hero as having just stepped out from the boat that conveyed con-veyed him from the ship Lawrence to the ship Niagara standing hatless upon the deck of the latter vessel with upafced hand giving directions the attendaloft to try to so trim the sails as to enable him to run alongside the enemy The statue is in bronze and weighs about four tons It is located exactly opposite the Perry mansion i |
