| Show Happy Esquimaux WASHINGTON Sept Lieutenant Wm H Scheutze U S N who was sent to the Lena Delta to distribute the presents made by the Government to the natives who rendered assistance to the Jeannette survivors returned to Washington yesterday yester-day and this morning reported in person to the Secretary of State Lieutenant Scheutze found many of the natives of the Delta i a condition of destitution and some at the point of starvation The recipients of the presents were greatly surprised and celebrated cele-brated the event tumultuously by firing of guns and otherwise Such of the presents as were adopted to the purpose were donned at once and were thereafter worn conspicuously con-spicuously outside of the fur garments of their lucky owners Lieutenant Scheutzes official report to the Secretary has not yet I been made complete |
