Show tPf DISCHARGED AND REARRESTED F Cooper Flops Out of the Frying Into the Fire F A Cooper a West Jordan cohab was brought in from the Pen this morning morn-ing and examined as to his qualifications for taking the poor debtors oath Cooper has at one time been quite welltodo though if he is truthful in his evidence he is now a bankrupt I He said that he ha been in the mercantile business for about fourteen years He used to since the carry a stock of 9000 but closing down of tho smelters he had reduced his stock to about 4000 After he was arrested ho had placed his brother I in charge of his business and his creditors credi-tors had agreed to let it run on in that way during his incarceration But for some reason or other tho brother throw up tho business and on tho yerv day of his sentence Cooper was obliged to make an assignment to Walker Brothers his principal l creditors Ho had a house ana store built on a threeacre lot but these were mortgaged for 3000 their full value He had about six years ago sold a 100 acre farm to his second wife for 100 He did this in order to provide for her His third wife has some property but she got this from her parents par-ents and not from the prisoner The only property he had sold within the past two years was a span of horses a buggy a wagon three cows and some other stock These were sold before his arrest and his object was to provide for his family All the property he has left is one horse two cows and a wagon He was recognized as a bankrupt by his creditors who had so far been able to realize 45 cents on the dollar for what he owed them The Judge said that he would take the matter under consideration until 1 oclock At the hour named the Judge told the prisoner that he would be allowed to take the oath and be discharged No sooner was this formality gone through with than Cooper who was about to start for home was confronted by an officer and a warrant charging him with unlawful cohabitation cohab-itation was read to him He seemed somewhat surprised at being arrested ar-rested so soon after his release but he said he thought he could furnish the necessary bonds The defendant said that he desired to waive examination and his bonds were therefore placed at 1500 He soon had his sureties fixed up and it was not long before he was on his way to his home a sadder but a wiser man |
