procession and marched to the palace The line extended from the palace to the opera house When the procession arrived at the palace the Emperor and Empress appeared at the second window on the ground floor Presi dent Muenick of the students committee rode up to the window of their majesties who with the Grand Duchessof Baden rose and bowed Mueniok called for cheers for the Emperor for the victorious commander in glorious battles for the beloved father of his country for the author of the union of the German races for the defender of the frontiers of the Empire for the guardian of the peace of the world The applause was tremendous followed by the singing of the national anthem The Emperor remained re-mained standing with evident gratification The procession then marched past the palace The whole scene was most brilliant The students cheered loudly at Bismarcks palace where the Chancellor Count Herbert Her-bert Bismarck and Count Rantzen were awaiting procession In response to the calls of the students Bismarck opened the window and bowed his thanks A similar ovation was tendered Von Moltke and the officers of the Generals staff The whole affair was conducted in the most orderly manner During the procession the Emperor called up several students to express his gratification gratifica-tion at the manner of congratulating him He said he rejoiced greatly in the spirit displayed dis-played by them Ho expected much from the academy youths of Germany as the circumstances cir-cumstances and times were serious After referring tothe dissolution of the Reichstag he questioned many students separately as regarding their birthplace the studies they pursued the number of terms they had completed com-pleted and the corporation in which they belonged longed The Empress also expressed her thanks for the ovations At 11 oclock when the cuirassier regiment came to relieve the guard at the palace thousands who still remained re-mained burst into enthusiastic cheering which continued so long that at last the Emperor came to the window again and thanked the people His appearance had a magical effect The cheers were redoubled the national anthem was again sung the Emperor waved his hand and disappeared At the last hour crowds still remained in the vicinity of the palace Among the numerous birthday rumors is the report that the Grand Duke of Baden will building Presently the procession was seen approaching in perfect silence The students marched five abreast They were attired in a picturesque dress and carried car-ried a bare sword in one hand and a torch in the other In the line were banners of old German towns Two students dressed in the uniform of VonWallensteins soldiers headed the procession Then came others on horseback followed by the Zeithen Hussars with powdered periwigs and white corded coats and cocked hats surmounted with white aigrettes the band playing a simple tune ot the middle ages with touching effect When they reached the Emperors window the Hussars wheeled back and the torches were seen moving in different directions direc-tions moving in and out like will o wisps This was repeated several times with increased in-creased effect the torches circling and crossing cross-ing like the ancient war dance to the sounds of soft old world music now approaching and now fading away in the distance While the procession of students was passing the Palace the multitude bared their heads and the cheers became wilder and wilder until the Emperor overcome with emotion was compelled withdraw i |
