Show THE WHEAT CROP OF KANSAS I Krcatly Damasrcd by the Eecent Heavy liaiii Storms PAOLA Kansas July 5 Another heavy I rain storm visited this vicinity last night continuing all through today It seems general throughout Eastern Kansas and I Western Missouri and this is the sixth day I of almost continuous cold rain The work of gathering the wheat crop is brought to a j complete standstill The wheat in stacks I I I I has been ruined and estimates place the I loss in Kansas alone at 1000000 bushels I besides damage to grain yet in the field Corn will probably sustain little injury but I I is backward twenty days as compared with the latest season for twenty years The State Boards last estimate of 10000 COO bushels of wheat was based on alleged improvement in the southeastern portion of Kansas which was expected to partially offset the disasters in the great wheat belt of the centre This estimato took no account of the weeks storm and the immense damage to shocked wheat in the more favorable localities Further west there is no wheat to be injured by storms or anything else Fears are now entertained that potatoes will rot in tho ground Minor crops will suffer in liko ratio It is not drouth but too much rain and cold that injures in-jures Kansas this year TOPEKA July 5The estimate of tho wheat yield in Kansas by the Secretary of the State Board of Agriculture sent from Topeka on Friday was 10200000 bushels instead in-stead of IL000000 as published in all the papers The mistake occurred in transmission transmis-sion j |
