Show < a I TROUBLE OX THE CARS One Lady Accuses Another of the Theft of a Diamond Brooch I Searched Exonerated and I Apologized to I Last evenings Rio Grande passenger train from the north brought to the city I three gentlemen and two ladies who were considerably agitated on account of a gentleman and his wife of tho number I charging a young lady with having stolen a valuable diamond brooch From I parties interested in the unpleasant affair it was learned that this gentleman and his wife who lost the brooch were en route from California to the East At j Kelton a young lady got on the Central Pacific train to make a visit to her parents I in Salt Lake When between Kelton and Ogden the married lady left the sleeper and went forward to one of the firstclass I coaches She then went to the breakfast room where she remained a few minutes and came rushing back to where the young lady a gentleman acquaintance and a stranger sat conversing and L charged one of the three with having her brooch On arriving at Ogden an officer was summoned to search the lady who was so strongly accused by the married woman L of having her jewelry in her possession The officer refused tosearch her and the annoyed party came on to Salt Lake where a person can get searched at any time of the day or night One of the accused got off the t train L while the rest of the party were held in the car Officer Calder was called and L escorted the five people to the ladies waitingroom in the D R G depot but declined to search the lady handing her over to her feminine accuser The Eastern lady made a thorouh examina tion which discloHPno 1tf hrnofh A full realization of the injustice done I the young lady was felt and most hearty apologies were offered by the suspicious I party who then burst into tears She explained that the brooch was a gift from the dying hand of an only sister nnd it I was far more dear to her than its real intrinsic worth After every possible amend for the breach had been made the young lady was freed from the humiliating position she had been subjected to The rest of the party proceeded on their way with the very kindest of feeling toward the young woman who was exonerated from all suspicion by her own request to be searched 1 |
