Show oj A CORRESPONDENT of the Omaha Herald gives the following receipt for a newfangled new-fangled pie crust Mix together sweet cream and mashed po tato and if you would have thebest success use graham dough but no butter or lard There is enough butter in the cream which with the starch inthepotato will hold the crust nicely together and will thoroughly thor-oughly and quickly cook through and through This is very like a certain class of pie frequently made in the army during the war and called train pie At Stone mans switch in front of Fredricksburg trains used to arrive several times during the day and night and deliver dried apples ap-ples and flour to the suttlers who built a bakery for the manufacture of pie When I the whistle of a coming locomotive was I heard men would break vay from whatever what-ever they were doing and run bareheaded with a pie in their hands toward the track Each mansometimes hundreds of themwould lay his pie on the track and impatiently await the coming of the train The only way they could hope to divide the pie in pieces was by having it 5 run over by a freight train hence the name train pie Potatoes and bran and frequently beans figured largely in train I pie |
