Show M PECKS BAD BOY An Awful Boy an Awful Troupe and Generally Awful Altogether Theonly authorized copyrighted patented pat-ented and genuine dramatic version of George Pecks Bad Boy papers with its I advertised great cast of characters was presented to a crowded house at the Salt Lake Theatre last evening AVith Pecks bad boy his pa his ma and the grocery man the reading public are tolerably familiar fa-miliar with Pecks Bad Boyin dramatic dra-matic Shape the public are not so familiar and the desire to see the bad boys pranks upon the stage was unquestionably what filled the theatre last night We believe all who saw Pecks Bad Boy last night are thoroughly satisfied satisfied that it will be a long time before they see anything so thoroughly had again It is a playfor the gods the gods of the upper circle and even they though occasionally vociferous were not entirely happy while the lower portion I of the house tried desperately once in awhile I a-while to applaud under the delusion that I they wereenjoying the delectable acting singing and monkeying of this really great cast in this really great version of Iecks Bad Boy The DEMOCRAT cannot attempt to criticise the piece Criticism necessarily involves mention of the good points along with the bad ones and when thpre are none of the former and such a multitude of the latter criticism degenerates degen-erates into condemnation and profanity In brief this hodgepodge of Pecks Bad Boy is destitute of a single element of comedy j the companywith perhaps the exception of J AV Grath the groceryman lacks the first suggestion of a comedian j the singing is in keeping with the acting both execrable j the witticisms smack more of an antediluvian minstrel show and the general effect is neither amusing nor profitable To go into detail would be invidious where the entire company is so evenly balanced where all did their apparent best to render a miserable dramatization in a much more miserable style personal mention is not necessary or complimentary compliment-ary The one featureand the only one gaining an encore was the dance of Miss Ada Boshell which encore was justly deserved de-served The singing of Policeman Duffy and Jonas Bullock M D must be heard to be appreciated and then it would be a very cultured audience that could tell where the applause came in In making this mention the DEMOCRAT casts no reflections upon the respective members of the troupe We presume they know as well as we that the company com-pany is a snap not traveling upon its own merits or the merits of the play for neither possesses any meritbut simply taking in the road the people and as many dollars as possible Of course there have been worse companies at the SaltLake TI atre but not much |
