Show 4 THE DRIVING PARK RACES Some Excitiiip Speeding Yesterday and Considerable Slpplul I Quite a Little Kicking I The thorough announcement of the races that took place yesterday at the Driving Park was sufficient to attract avery a-very respectable attendance in the afternoon after-noon The weather was altogether pleasant pleas-ant and the average time made by the 1 racers was very good In the first running race six good ones started with Victress at the pole Selkirk second and Sorrel Dick third while the I others Molly McCarthy Wild Idle and Tobe took the outside On the second score they were sent off and Selkirk took the pole at once while Victress followed fol-lowed closely behind Every person present became enthusiastic at the pretty race which continued to the end about as at the start excepting that Tobe made a dash on reaching the homestretch and gained second place where he crowded Selkirk under the wire with Sorrel Dick at his heels Time 53 seconds The second racea trotting race for 80was for the best three heats in five The following horses were entered J W Fallons black gelding Alf and Caddy a filly of Birdseye The horses got away on the second trial with Caddy t the pole but Alf cut in ahead and led the race until the homestretch was reached when he broke and was passed by Caddy who took the race in 246 In the second heat the mare did not trot so well and Alf came under the wire at 1 walk winning the heat m Z 47 The third heat showed some fast spurts of trotting by the mare but as in the second heat the horse trotted more steadily and won the heat in 245 The fourth heat was more of a contest and had Caddy trotted more evenly she would have won the race but after reaching the last quarter quar-ter she broke and Alf won the heat race and purse Time 246 The second running race was between Mollie McCarthy Johnny Sanford and Sorrel Dick a half mile and repeat for 150 Sanford sold first choice in the pool and the other two went for the same money In starting Sanford won the pole with McCarthy second They were sent off even on the second trial Sorrel Dick worked to second placo back of Sanford San-ford with McCarthy behind The race was close between Sanford and Dick but was won by the former in 53 seconds The second heat required no scoring but was sent off on the first trial and like the first heat it was won by Sanford in 533 seconds The fourth race was for the 23 class between Jack Gamble Greenback and Birdseye for 1 purse of 150 The horses started with Greenback to the pole and Gamble in second place Greenback Green-back sold favorite and Gamble in choice with Birdseve sold second in the pool The drivers were charged to observe the rules especially the manager of Greenback Green-back as that horse was in the habit of making skips in a race and complaint of running had been entered against h They started nicely Greenback lost his feet on the start but settled back to work almost as quickly only to splurge again by running skips Gamble held the lead for a short distance until he lost his feet in trying to get there and was passed by Greenback in 239 In the second heat Birdseye did some fast trotting and held second place to Greenback i Green-back much of the time but by breaking every few rods Greehoack put himself l far ahead and won the heat in 234 amid much dissatisfaction which Was only settled by the judges after considerable discussion In the third heat the horses got away on the first trial with Gamble in the lead On the first quarter Greenback and Gamble Gam-ble broke simultaneously and Birdseye took the lead which she kept to the finish and won the heat in 2 343 with Greenback second The fourth heat was more evenly trotted by all three horses Birdseye got the lead but lost it again with the other two hQrses contesting equally for first place for some considerable distance until Greenback made some of his breaks and got to the front with Gamble by his side In pass ing under tlje wire Greenback had but afoot a-foot the lead and was put back to second place on account of tbad breaks Gairi ble took the heat in 240J J 4J6 The fifth race was a threequarter mile dash for 75 between Mollie McCarthy Johnny Sanford Victress and Sorrel Dick Mollie was found t be lame and was withdrawn from he race and pools on her declared off Sorrel Dick took the pole Victress second and Sanford the outside After much scoring they were started together and ran nicely throughout through-out the heat Dick won by Ja half length Sanford second and Victress third Time 1253 SIt S-It was now dark and th6 races f closed r the trotting race being announced jjqn elude today at 2 pm S I |
