Show V 4 1 PICKED UP BY THE POLICE j How ITlcGimii Was mistaken Kuu I In For Trespass A Larceny j j rand a Theft t j I This was a gala day in the police court and His Honor Justice Speirs hadi fine array of various grades of offenders before him which has occupied his attention I atten-tion the entire day T McGinnis evidently thought he was celebrating Saint Patricks Day yesterday I yester-day and filled himself up with gin until i he could hardly navigate His celebration celebra-tion cost him 5 James Taylor Thomas Nixon and the alleged original John Smith took lodg ings in Fred Mitchells barn in the Eleventh Elev-enth ward and were fined 5 for trespass Edward Kinney got drunk and thought he could swear in not the t choicest American Amer-ican language on our public streets and will swear still harder at having to pay a fine of 10 James Kinney alias the Wood River Tiger was arraigned this morning on the charge petty larceny through haying hay-ing stolen various sums of money from the money drawer while in the employ of Louis Benites as a waiter in the San Francisco Fran-cisco restaurant After the theft csco rsturmt Aftr Kinney skipped out for a southern clime and had reached Francklyn on the Utah Southern Railroad and was in the act of stealing a ride on the cars when Officer Salmon who had quietly gone in pursuit of him caught up and brought him and a tramp companion to the city jail The prosecution prosecu-tion was conducted by City Attorney Fletcher and Mr Hoge and the defense by Edward Critchelow There was some lively sparring between the attorneys as t propr questions to address to a witness wit-ness which created considerable amusement amuse-ment among the spectators The evidence went to show that Kinney had taken the money from the drawer and appropriated it and after cleaning out the drawer of all the money in it but fortyfive cents he had taken the night train for parts unknown un-known After the testimony for the prosecution pros-ecution was all in defendants attorney moved for a dismissal of the case as t larceny and t substitute embezzlement instead which was overruled by the Court The defendant then plead guilty to the charge of larceny and admitted that he had taken 2115 from the drawer The Court reserved the sentence until this afternoon Miss Belle Simmons a young woman occupying a room at the City Hotel wa robbed of 20 in money a 25 note of hand and a gold watch and chain the amount being altogether about 220 She S claims that a man by the name of Evan Jeffs is the thief and Officer Jefs Ofc r Salmon was dispatched t Ogden and found his man and brought him to jail Jeffs is said to be a deserting soldier and after the city authorities get through with him the other charge will be investigated His trial is being held this afternoon |
