Show ANARCHISTS AND LABOR UNIONS The Keu Flag iu Chicago Almost n Sceno From the French evolution There is war in Chicago between the i Anarchists and the Labor Unions The I Anarchists are chiefly Europeans who l I have a grudge against all government alII j I property and all public order They number several thousand and in a recent Sunday parade turned out 4000 strong The ted flag was frequent in the line and the legends and mottoes were suggestive They ran Each Government is a conspiracy con-spiracy against the people j cDown with all laws j Government is for slaves Our civilization is powder lead and clubs j Liberty without equality is a lien Lawlessness is equality Private Pri-vate property is theft j Might i right The procession seemed to have stepped into the street out of the French revolution revolu-tion The speeches were lawless and reckless and the beer and liquor consumed con-sumed testified to the thirst the threatening threat-ening crowd A few days later the Labor Unions paraded par-aded without the red flag and piratical mottoes and passed this resolution The organized mechanics and workingmen j work-ingmen of Chicago on this the first celebration cele-bration of the labor national holiday deem it due themselves and the public to announce that they know their rights and will maintain them at all hazards They prefer the ballot to the bullet reason rea-son to ruffianism united and intelligent action to meaningless violence as the agency best calculated to remove the evils of which they complain The means that may be justifiable in the despotism des-potism of the Old World are unwarranted and out of place in a free republic where the franchise is the inalienable right of every American citizen irrespective of color nationality and they are unwilling un-willing to aid in the destruction of the institutions of our conntry the hope of the oppressed of every clime which their valor and patriotism have secured Upon that platform the Union should receive the sympathy and support of every citizen Laboring men who lore this country and stand for its institutions regardful the lives liberty and property to protect which governments are created are the best element the genuine nobility nobil-ity of a free country They are the cre ators of its wealth the inspiration of its thrift its dependence in peace and its defenders in war Let those who guide public opinion consider well this voice of labor from Chicago Let them remember that even injustice put upon the noblemen I noble-men who are capable of so elevated an utterance recruits the ranks of anarchy and enlists labor under the red flag while justice and good faith swell the roster of those who at their hard toil cheerfully bear testimony to the beneficence of institutions in-stitutions which fairly administered offer to them the ownership of homes and the enjoyment of lifes opportunities and to their children education and progress We discuss party politics and exhaust us lifting men into office and creating greatness of littleness Can no time be given to the interests of these patriotic I laborers Where is the Senator or Representative Rep-resentative in Congress who will aid them by laws that shelter their wages I and increase the purchasing power of their earnings by cooperative purchase of homes and of the necessaries of life I The aggregation of capital is a subject I of great complaint but witness the marvels mar-vels it has wrought It has gridironed the land with railway and it plows the sea with floating palaces that are ferries between continents It is coopeiation only Apply the same principle to tho investments labor makes of its wages and in half of another generation there 1 need not bea laborer in this land who I does not own the roof that shelters his I I wife and babies I I It ii i known that in the purchase of j I food and clothing alone in the petty retail j I re-tail way which is now the practice labor I is at a disadvantage of fifty per cent in the market Suppose a community of four thousand laborers buying a pound of meat a day each In the aggregate there is the dishonest or accidental shortage short-age upon each pound as it is weighed separately There is also the chance for leaving the fractional change in favor of the seller and there is the high retail price bn the meat which when consumed con-sumed has cost away above what it I should Suppose again that State and Federal cooperative laws knit these four thousand laborers together for their common com-mon welfare and this food purchase be in one transaction of two tons of dressed beet Theaccidental intended short weight is eliminated the disadvantage disadvan-tage in making change is impossible and the food is secured in better condition and Variety at wholesale rates Apply this process to tho whole range of supplies sup-plies to the purchase in large blocks of land for homes and to the erection of houses upon it and why does it not take the pinch and strain out of the thrifty laboring mans life Let the Anarchists fill with beer and stagger under thered flag and denounce property while we shape our laws and policy to put property within the easy reach ownership of such thrifty and patriotic labor as has dignified toil by the I temperate lution utterance of the Chicago reso I |
