Show Experimental Sugar Making partment WASnINGTON of Oct 4Lnst year the Dq Agriculture began to expen nJent in a small way at Ottawa Kansas 1 i J < with the diffusion of sugar making process as applied to sorghum cane Instead of crushing the cane as in the sugar oane process pro-cess it was shaved off in minute slices and tho sucrose or sugaryielding sap extracted by streams of water The results obtained were so encouraging that tho field of operations opera-tions was removed to Fort Scott this year and with a largely increased plant The experiments ex-periments are now in progress on a scale of some magnitude Today a telegram was recevied from Prof Wiley the chemist of the Department who is in charge of the works announcing tho complete success ul the experiments The telegram states that syrup has been obtained from the sorghum cane of a very light color good flavor and crystallizing well There was a complete extraction of sucrose in six of the cells of the battery Commissioner Colman is very much elated at the results of the experiments experi-ments and regards them as of great value from an economical point of view In the process now used in the South there is a loss of nearly fifty per cent of the saccharine matter contained in the cane while the experiments ex-periments at Fort Scott show an absolute extraction of all the sugar |
