Show THE GEOLOGICAL SURVEY What Major Poxrell Says of Ills Plans For the Year WASHINGTON July 14 Major Powell director of tho Geological survey has submitted sub-mitted to the Secretary of tho Interior the plan of operations for the geological survey for tho present fiscal year He proposes to continue the topographical surveys of the United States now in progress In an interview in-terview Powell said The geological work will be carried on as heretofore in various parts of the country in New England along the Atlantic cost through the Appalacha inn mountain system in the lower Mississippi region along southern and western shores of Lake Superior in tho rich mountain region in what promises to be important im-portant coal petroleum and natural gas Sold in the near future in Montana in the California gold belt and in half a dozen other regions of interest i from scientific and economic standpoints In a portion of the Rocky Mountain region lying within Colorado Colo-rado the work is among the most important of tho institution and during last summer the Denver coal field was exhaustively investigated and report setting forth tho extent and value of the coal will be prepared during the present summer In the Geyser region of Yellowstone Yellow-stone Park the studies already begun will bo continued during the present season Mr Brecker has finished his investigation of the quioksilver deposits of the Slope He has not only made a thorough local study but has taken up the whole subject of the quicksilver deposits of tho globe visited those of the greatest import anoo including the mines of New Almaden Spain His report upon this subject is about to go to press but in tho meantime his assistants as-sistants nave taken up the investigation of the auriferous deposits of the gold belt skirting the western base of the Sierras in California |
