Show Pasteur AiitlIIydrophobla PHILADELPHIA July 15lhe Medical News in its issue of this week will contain a lengthy abstract of tho report presented to Parliament last week by the British Commission Com-mission appointed last year to inquire into M Pasteurs treatment of hydrophobia From this abstract the following paragraphs are taken It may hence be deemed certain that M Pasteur has discovered a method of protection protec-tion from rabies comparable with that which vaccination affords against infection from smallpox It would be difficult to over estimate the importance of the discovery dis-covery whether for its practical utility or for its application to general pathology It shows a new method of inoculation or as M Pasteur sometimes calls it of vaccination vaccina-tion tho like of which may become possible to employ for the protection of both man and domestic animals against tho disaster of the most intense kinds of virus The duration of the immunity caused by inoculation is not yet determined but during the two years that have passed since it was first proved there have been no indicatinns of its being limited lim-ited Tho committee thinks therefore that that the inoculations practiced by M Pasteur have prevented a reoccurrence of hydrophobia hydropho-bia in a largo proportion of those who if they had not been so inoculated would have died of that disease and his discovery shows it may become possible to arrest by inoculation inocula-tion even after the infection of other diseases dis-eases besides hydrophobia His researches have also added very largely to the knowledge knowl-edge of tho pathology hydrophobia and supplied a sure means of determining whether an animal which died under suspicion suspi-cion of having rabies was really affected with that disease or not The Medical News says editorially The report of the British Hydrophobia Commission Commis-sion constitutes the ablest defense of M 1 Pasteurs mathod which has yet been made and it is cause for congratulation that men so competent to observe the facts and weigh the evidence have been able after full investigations in-vestigations to reach a unanimous conclusion conclu-sion as to the prophylactic value of the inoculation in-oculation of Pasteur PARIS July 15The celebration which began be-gan yesterday in commemoration of the fall of tho Bastile was continued until this morning The fete was observed in an orderly or-derly way The newspapers highly compliment compli-ment the people for the good sense shown in refraining from everything of a disturbing nature There were a few isolated manifestations mani-festations but these were of no political importance im-portance |
