Show 5 i HOXE AGAIN 3Tr C H Barrntt and What He S Saw What He Heard During I His Trip East and What He Now Tliiults I A DcjiocnAT regO ter called on Mr C < S R Barratt on his arrival home Jftstrtnr thy and had a long and pleasant chat I about things here about things thereabout there-about things everywhere We arc not at liberty to give the entire conversation but are pleased to give the following which will be of interest to all ReporterMr Barratt tell us if agreeI able concerning your trip East Mr BI am so delighted to be at home and so goodnatured that you may ask what you please and I will tell you all I knowand more perhaps that is if you will permit me to lounge and talk and smoke all at once First you know we never tire of talking about our climate cli-mate I think we are to be excused and that Beecher was right for once when he said his idea of Heaven was Salt Lake in May I have been in and out of the city several times and was never more im pressed with our advantages in this regard re-gard than when running down from the Wasatch among green fields and blooming bloom-ing orchards With the exception of a few green patches and very weak ones at that about Denver there is not a blossom or a sprig of green from the Rockies to the Atlantic Coast The longest stay made at any one place was at Washington and that only three days Neither you nor your readers care to hear about railways eating eat-ing stations or the buzz and whirl of wheels and saws in furniture factories I was in New York of course Having two suits due me from Republican friends here on election account I delayed the matter because I was anxious that the outfit both in price and style should meet the approval of the gentlemen who are of known liberality and acknowledged taste In my efforts to satisfy them in this regard 1 gathered some information on fashion items which may be interesting interest-ing to our more dressy or dudeish young menThe The proper thing now is to ape our next of kin across the water The Knickerbocker Club of New York has the complaint worse than all others and has attained nearest to perfection in the matter A few days since a gentleman gentle-man leaving the Club saw a young acquaintance ac-quaintance step on to the sidewalk with umbrella raised and pants rolled up What does this mean l he said the day is bright ana the streets diy and you have your umbrella spread and your pants turned up Yes my deah boy but they have just had a cable at the I Club from London you know and its raining in London you know deah boy replied the devotee of the Club The latest feature in the fashion line with the other sex and which promises to be more general than heretofore may also be illustrated by a story A gentleman gentle-man upon being asked how the ladies were dressed at a recent fashionable dinner din-ner party answered that he did not look under the table What have you to say about Washington Wash-ington regards Utah her appointments etc I was twice in Washington three days each time I have something to say but the relations between Washing ton and Utah arid her people are too serious and important to gossip and rattle rat-tle about thoughtlessly I propose to beat be-at home a while and think a little fools rush in where angels fear to tread I beg you will believe I have no disposition to magnify the importance of ins visits to Washington The humblest us may be instruments of good at least l we may try and it iti neither decent nor modest advertise ourselves If there is any honey to be had I do not propose to 1 lumt the liecs wmwj brass < lAs l-As to appointments about as much is known hero as there to the outsider None one pretends to guess where ft > e light ninrr will Otribo Them la liffln nrnlviliil ity of any considerable changes until time expiration of terms The exceptions may be made to occur at any time It is not improbable the vacant judgeship and one other may be filled from without the Territory If the President has said to those assuming to handle the patronage from other sections Before you ask appointments ap-pointments suppose you settle your home quarrels and show some unanimity among yourselves if he huts said this others why not to applicants from Utah Car you or any one suggest a name for any important office in Utah that could be sent up with anything approaching a II unanimous approval that would not in fact be lauded by some past all sense and condemned by others beyond all decencyand this perhaps existing be tween men claiming to be of the same party Should the President be blamed if he fail to satisfy us and for relief turn to the outside I saw considerable of Democratic pol iticians both in Washington and elsewhere else-where and have talked with editors in the larger towns and cities I made it a point to do this I lost no time thereby but lots of sleep for stores close you know and merchants are supposed to sleep but newspaper offices never close and newspaper men never sleep There is no question but that there is some feel ing a lot of smothered undertone of grumbling at the Presidents delay in turning the rascals out something like n sl > oiled child when if ernna rT in tho corner and grumbles and c mumbles in L an undertone because it cant sit at the first table But they might as well and must be patient and like the childs their turn will come and the pies and good things be none the less enjoyable because of the delay He is right The mass of his own and a liberal amount of the opposition party ap plaud his action thus far It is the opin ion of those best informed that neither he nor his Cabinet will be turned aside from the course mapped out by the fault I finding of the lesser politicians the grumbling of the ultra press the growl ing and swearing of the moss backs nor the earnest but not wholly disinterested preaching of the Republicans on Civil Service reform If Mr Cleveland and his Cabinet are Democrats they are gen tlemen and know it would be vulgar as 1 well impolitic to devote the early weeks of the Administration to unseatinO unseating political politi-cal enemies and seating political friends And further he is aware that the party he succeeds is the party of refinement and culture and since they are not in sympathy with his policy and prophesied in the event of his election dire and dreadful results he has reason to and i probably does expect resignations It would he but natural I to avoid being associated asso-ciated with the calamities predicted this would be but delicate and considerate I and in keeping with the claims of the party and educate by example the I coarser Democratic nature up to the higher level by relieving him of the ne cessity of doing that which to any man must be the reverse of agreeable Are there any resignations on file in Washington from Utah so far as could learn 7 you Again wishing to avoid the appear ance of magnifying ihy interview I will only saythis much that up to the date of f that interview the President had neither heard nor seen anything of any Utah resignations 1 t |
