Show T- T Ville T-Ville Ville players step up after n injuries but to no avail John Renshaw Sports Editor Guy Mackay head coach of Taylorsville Highs High's baseball team was counting on a mixture mixture mixture mix mix- ture of youth and veterans to carry his team on the diamond But over the course of a baseball baseball base base- ball season season the script doesn't always go according to plan For most of the season Taylorsville was making those adjustments and excelling despite dealing with numerous injuries to key positions What Im I'm most proud of this season is when a few of our players went down with injuries said Mackay We had guys willing to step in and take their place They refused to let the adversity get them down and they kept on fighting fighting fighting fight fight- ing every game After going 15 0 in region the Warriors were consistently ranked in the top five in the Salt Lake Tribune Power Rankings and were carried by momentum heading into the SA 5 S- A tournament It was a wonderful season With the tough competition in league play and to go undefeated undefeated undefeated unde unde- it was an amazing run he said After winning 16 of their last 19 games the Warriors faced Lone Peak to open the tournament Despite Lone Peaks Peak's resiliency the Warriors prevailed 8 6 and then knocked off Riverton in the second round 8 Coach Mackay preached consistency to his team tea but t G th the fac- fac d. d Agin Am h n ll l It ithe y nl next next il round Taylorsville was missing missing missing miss miss- ing the consistent hitting they were accustomed to throughout through through- out the season The Cavemen pulled off the upset 8 Focus was our biggest problem pitcher Tyler Curtis said We played good through the season but I 1 think II 11 mod we were a little overconfident t tin in the tournament and maybe over looked our opponent Taylorsville would face Bingham in the next round and the Warriors' Warriors inconsistent hitting would prove costly for forthe forthe forthe the second consecutive game as the Miners ended Tayl Taylorsville's season The Warriors failed to take advantage advantage advantage tage of opportunities as Taylorsville lle only batted for 1 10 with runners in scoring position We weren't very patient at atthe atthe atthe the plate and we became overanxious overanxious overanxious over over- anxious Mackay said Im I'm a little disappointed in the way we played during the tournament tournament tournament ment after the way we performed performed performed per per- formed throughout the season sea sea- son The Warriors will look to be just as competitive next season season season sea sea- son as a gro group p frs will b Yet t tb the diamond It- It Right Fielder Tyler Chism will be looking to rebound from his torn ACL injury that he suffered at the end of the season against Skyline Chism led Taylorsville in hitting at Hes our number three hitter hitter hitter hit hit- ter in the lineup and if he can get be a very good player Mackay said It will take at least six months for Chism to fully recover from the injury It certainly concerns me Chism said But my hopes and goals for next season is for all of us to work together as a team and compete for state Second Baseman Landon Todd will manage the infield next season Todd was called upon to step up after Taylor North went down with injuries I I iI I felt like this was my I chance to play Todd said Im glad I 1 got the experience of playing I 1 just tried my best and had no fear Mackay was pleased with Todds Todd's efforts this season despite the difficult circum circum- stances Landon filled in great this year The aspect he brings to the game is his competitiveness competitiveness competitiveness com com- toughness and refuse to lose attitude the coach said Mackay will turn to Tyler Curtis to anchor the mound next season With Tyler being such a ahard ahard ahard hard thrower we just need to improve his control and build his confidence Mackay said Curtis will V ill look to move p p pin in m eL Lf biaH rte 1 di ing V 1 fifth this season Well be a really good pitching staff next year and I 1 just need to stay focused and keep j my confidence up he said i Mackay will will be relying relying relying rely rely- ing on numerous veteran veter veter- an players to carry the load in 2007 But if there are adjustments that need to be made to next seasons season's script the Warriors will need just justas as many weapons from the bench as they had this year to battle in sA 5 s- A competition I I I |
