Show Costas Costa's music sweetens up a quiet Thursday j Marissa Groce Groc Local Arts Staff Writer As the more than triple- triple wide line of people extended around the corner comer of South in Salt Lake City it was easy to see that the Matt Costa show on Thursday May 25 at atthe atthe atthe the Avalon Theater was swarming with fans long before the doors opened Everyone was smiling and ecstatic even though it was unbearably hot outside After the doors opened sometime well after seven the show got underway at 8 pm p.m. Norwegian songwriter singer Ane Me Brun opened for Matt Costa And playing an acoustic set she assured the crowd that she would make them a little warmer wanner with her music Bruns Brun's popularity started to soar with the release of her debut album Spending Time With Morgan in 2003 She released this album on her own record label DetErMine Records which she owns co-owns with Norwegian musician Larsson Her most recent album A Temporary Dive was released in the United States on May 9 2006 Playing songs such as To Let Myself Go the brand new Miss Moaning Rubber Soul Song No 6 the title track from A Temporary Dive and more Brun embodied embodied embodied an Ani DiFranco persona while at the same time having havinga a melodious style all her own On Ow most of her songs Brun danced harmoniously with her guitar as if it were the subject that she crooned of in her songs Her album Duets was released in late 2005 This CD is a collection of often ten tel duets featuring featuring featuring fea fea- turing musicians such as Ron Sexsmith Liv Widell and Syd Matters One such song Rubber Soul is a duet with Brun and musician Although was not there to accompany her on this song for the show the song was not any less beautiful beautiful beautiful ful with a solo Brun There is isa isa isa a sweet sorrow in Bruns Brun's voice masked only by the notes plucked from her guitar At first the large audience seemed slightly unsure of her abilities but by the end of the first song the crowd was going wild This continued up until her very last song as the crowds crowd's noise in sync with the music Matt Costa performed promptly after Bruns Brun's set He started out with the Beatles- Beatles esque song Oh Dear His second song Behind the Moon showed Costa playing a mean harmonica solo while still playing his guitar talk about tasking multi-tasking The audiences audience's voices were probably probably probably proba proba- bly more audible over Costas Costa's when the popular song Cold December was played Actually despite the lack of air conditioning the crowd was still energetic throughout all of Costas Costa's songs and sang along to most of them After a Buddy Holly cover Well Alright a short jam session with Costa and drummer drummer drummer drum drum- mer Adam and the poignant tune everyone everyone everyone every every- one became even more alive with the performance of Sunshine Costa also performed performed performed per per- formed Yellow Taxi Sweet Rose Ballad of Miss Kate Sweet Thursday and These Arms all from his debut album Songs We Sing Between playing Sweet Thursday and These Arms Costa showed a young kid in inthe inthe inthe the audience to play a part of one of his songs and after a minute the kid actually played the song with no help It was basically the most adorable thing ever The smell of pineapples and cigarettes accompanied companied mu much h hof of Costas Costa's performance It felt as if the whole show was a vacation taking place on some tropical land and Costa was completely mesmerizing After a truly mind-blowing mind set with many people clapping and moving in a way that could only be described as an awkward form of interpretive dance it was pretty much expected that an encore was inescapable However a four- four song encore put the icing on top of the cake For the first song Ane Me Brun did a duet with Costa Lullaby off the Curious George soundtrack with Jack Johnson was sung as well as a new song of Costas Costa's that he had never played live before Wash Away was chosen to be performed performed performed per per- formed absolutely last It was a very Sweet Thursday indeed |
