Show Disadvantaged students learn much from Williams' Williams help Andrew Marshall Campus Staff Writer Sally Williams is brighter and perkier in the early morning morning morning morn morn- ing than most people get the entire day Williams gets to work by am a.m. to ensure a smooth drive and a prime parking space This action alone Photo by Andrew Marshall speaks loudly to the character of Williams who is disciplined disciplined disciplined reliable and intelli intelli- gent A native to Bountiful Williams has taught at the South City Campus for the past 31 years She is stationed in the Skills Center working primarily with disadvantaged students Williams graduated from the University of Utah with her undergraduate degree in special education One of her classes required her to tutor students in the Human Resource Center Williams enjoyed this so much that she stayed and worked there as a volunteer for some time After graduating she continued to work for the Human Resource Center which is the present- present day Skills Center According to Williams the purpose of the Skills Center is isto isto isto to give term short-term training to get people a job the pur pur- pose to serve disadvantaged students Williams teaches a variety of classes lasses lasses-l including including- including f i-basi i basic computer classes and medical coding and billing classes which prepare students to become certified medical coders Williams has received a number of recognitions in her time at A few years ago she received the colleges college's Teaching Excellence Award Teacher continued on page 3 Teacher Williams serves faithfully for years ears at Continued from front page Just last year Williams was was i nominated by students as the best teacher at South City receiving the Student Choice Award More important than awards and recognition however Williams expressed satisfaction in witnessing the change she's seen come about in a persons person's life It makes such a difference in inthe inthe inthe the lives of the people that you teach Williams said Its very rewarding for me to see them go out and get a job and support themselves Williams has worked with all kinds of people from prison inmates to people living in the homeless shelter Her teaching style is different and has to adapt to the students' students needs Its It's very interactive I dont don't like to just stand there and lecture lecture lecture lec lec- ture to them Williams said I like to have an ongoing conversation conversation conversation conver conver- with the students I want them to feel really comfortable in asking for help Her goal for students varies from preparing a student to become competitive in the workforce to simply achieving better social interaction In one way or another Williams constantly constantly constantly con con- looks for improvement in the lives of the students she teaches Williams has had the opportunity opportunity opportunity to see some of the fruits of her labors A little over a year ago while visiting her sister sister sis- sis ter er in the hospital Williams saw the names of two of her former students on the doors of offices These students were managers over certain areas at the University of Utah hospital That was just the best thing trung to see how far they had come Williams said Success is seeing the student be able to succeed Williams idolizes a man who like herself has changed many lives Hes He's a hero to she and many others II J I President Hinckley I I 1 absolutely love him because hes he's so kind Williams said speaking of the current president president president dent of the church I thir think k his rus whole message is that we accept people as they are I |
