Show Earth Day Day vis visits its Lis Lisa Clark Contributing Writer A celebration was held last Saturday in hi honor of our Earth at Redwood Campus Attendees were able to learn all about ways to help out r our Earth D a y began in 1970 0 after r years of frustration frustration frustration tion over a lack of response by politicians politicians politicians on environmental issues Senator Gaylord Nelson the event originator announced in 1969 that there would be a nationwide demonstration demonstration demonstration demon demon- on behalf of the environ environ- ment The event which was an overwhelming overwhelming overwhelming over over- whelming success has since been held annually and is celebrated around the country each April Earth Day makes it possible to bring issues concerning our environment environment environment environ environ- ment to everyone's attention Evidence of this was made at recent celebration Our organization has displaced more than a billion gallons of gasoline gasoline gasoline gaso gaso- line since 1994 said Beverly Miller director of Utah's Clean Cities Coalition who was present at the event Utah's Clean Cities is one of of or 88 community based clean cities coalitions coalitions coalitions across the country The Earth Day Cont on Page 3 Earth Day Cont Cant from front main goal is to reduce petroleum consumption in the transportation sector They have teamed up with fleet managers businesses and government throughout the state to do so They hope to lower Americas America's petroleum needs needs' b on one million willon barrels of f oil pei peria lay by th the year eai- eai i wan rn t j t VI vi 11 J To achieve this goal they advocate for the increased use o of f alternative fuel vehicles hybrid elect electric c vehicles better fuel economy and efficiency use of alternative fuels and engine idle reduction Alternative fuel vehicles include the Honda Civic that runs on natural gas Not only is this car better on the environment environment environment environ environ- ment it is better for spending less at the gas pumps as well Natural gas runs about per gallon versus the price of normal gas which is well over 2 per gallon these days The cost of one of these vehicles vehicles cles Iles runs around a little little little lit lit- tle more than a normal Honda Civic There are some negatives to this option however such as limits on where they can travel Within Utah there arc plenty of refueling stations while outside of Utah there are not so many excepting California which actually has more stations than Utah Hybrid electric vehicles are vehicles which still use regular gas but much less of it They range in fuel economy from 40 to 70 miles per gallon but still run just as well if not better than the average car Less drastic steps are possible for less fuel consumption and pollution A well maintained carwill car carwill carwill will get better gas mileage thus reducing the overall amount of fuel use The use of alternative fuel will also reduce our dependence on oil While some alternative fuels require modifications to engines to be able to use them there are some fuels such as which is available currently in Utah and can be used in any f f that runs on diesel J Jt t Another Another- great great alternative fuel s eth h h While of I ethanol does require engine modification a low blend can b bused be used in normal gasoline engines The great thing about abou and ethanol is that the theare are completely renewable resources and are biodegradable is made from soybean s and ethanol is made from corn com said Miller Other friendly Earth-friendly topics a ent included ideas fOIw fo fOI w water rater ter conS conservation Vati re renewable energy land recycling 3 f k J t. t u |
