Show 1 Letter to the Editor On Monday October 3 walking from the South City Campus parking lot lotto lotto lotto to my days day's first class I Iwas Iwas Iwas was greeted by two men with broad smiles and little little little lit lit- tle green books They were Gideons members members members mem mem- bers of a hundred year old group that gives free copies of the New Testaments to people all allover allover allover over the world I accepted accept accept- ed a copy and went on my way Later I learned many students were quite upset about the activities of the Gideons Surely these students did not mistake our colleges college's allowance of free speech on campus as e endorsement endorsement endorse endorse- dorse- dorse ment of the speakers speaker's message Free expression expression expression sion means everyone gets to speak their piece Personally I was elated that the Gideons were here Previously I had the distinct impression that campuses were closed to all outside speech I had never seen anything like this free expression on campus from the non campus community before It is exciting to know that has similar policies to the University of Utah where any person is allowed the right to free speech in open areas of the campus That day I was exposed to new ideas and met interesting people on campus whom I never would have otherwise met I look forward to experiencing a variety of different views and interesting interesting interesting inter inter- esting people on campus Messages from divergent views like war anti-war activists animal rights activists anti-abortion anti demonstrators and religious religious religious reli reli- proselytizers will make students think question discuss and respond The good news is that Free Expression is alive at Jared Kubly South Region r Vice President Vr |
