Show Bountiful canvass confirms election results By GARY R. BLODGETT BOUNTIFUL The official canvass of votes for Bountiful's 1987 Municipal Election disclosed some minor changes in total votes but not enough to warrant a recount. City Recorder Arden Jenson said that each of the candidates lost votes as a result of the canvass with elected newcomer Bob Gramoll losing the most, 34 votes. "Each of the other four candidates had five votes taken from their total count,' said Mr. Jenson, "but this was not enough to warrant a recount between Mrs. (Barbara) Holt and Mr. (Jerry) Lawrence." Also, the official count for the jail bond proposition from Bountiful voters was 3,184 in favor of the bond issue and 2,590 against the proposal. This amounts to 55 percent in favor and 45 percent against the sale of bonds, Mr. Jenson noted. The proposition which was on the ballot of all voters in Davis County asked for approval for the Davis County Commission Com-mission to sell bonds in the amount of $18.5 million for construction construc-tion of a new county jail and offices for county and judicial court personnel dealing directly with law enforcement and court procedures. Countywide, the vote was 12,536 in favor of the proposition and 10,817 against the bond issue, or 53.8 in favor of the proposal propos-al and 46.2 against the proposition. Mr. Jenson explained that the individual vote count for Mr. Lawrence, an incumbent councilman, would have to have been reduced from a 100-vote margin to 41 votes or less separating the two candidates to warrant a recount of votes. "This did not happen because each candidate had a five-vote reduction after the official canvass, leaving the 100-vote spread," he said. "This means that all of the candidates announced as winners in the unofficial tabulations are now officially elected and will take office in January." He explained that a recount can be granted only if the margin of votes between the lowest successful candidate (Mrs. Holt) and the next-lowest candidate (Mr. Lawrence)is41 votesorless based on one vote per voting district, and there are 4 1 voting districts in Bountiful. Also, all absentee votes were provided to the individual voting vot-ing district judges and were included in the total results reported, re-ported, Mr. Jenson explained. He said there should be no outstanding out-standing votes to change the final results as announced following follow-ing Tuesday's canvass. 5 |
