Show Quarantine incites fear with life like setting Diana Joy Jones Arts Quarantine is yet another confession of today's jaded audiences Regular scare tactics and actors in masks are just not enough anymore Headlining horror films for the month of October Quarantine attempts to keep things visceral Occasionally the film veers into manipulative dramatics consisting of ot close up shots of contorted faces and heavy sobbing sounds that are over At times it itis itis itis is awfully images abstract are quickly shot and just as quickly discarded The one thing that Quarantine iii- iii does successfully is that it in its moments that mat have the power to cause audiences to jump There is no eerie musical score present in inthis inthis inthis this film warning viewers vi when the boggy man is about to jump out of the shadows Here lies one of the films film's advantages We Weare Weare Weare are provided with fairly routine sounds The evil in Quarantine has no theme music only the sounds of blaring sirens and the screams of of civilians So when a body falls or an attack takes place the audience has no prior warning and they may sit just a little more alert in their seats There are some moments that jar up sentiments of fear in Quarantine though most generously the film itself is jarring As seen through the eyes of the camera man the poor guy drops the camera at least a half dozen times Anyone who has seen previews for the film already have foreseen this Likely anyone who sees a shak shaky camera as asan asan asan an ailment Cloverfield The Blair Witch Project will avoid this movie like the plague plague plague-no no pun intended Really it is all in inthe inthe inthe the eye of the beholder with th this package What you see is ultimately what you get get with a few shock moments that you may not have seen coming as a bonus The story centers on Angela Vidal Jennifer Carpenter a TV personality and her Cameraman Scott Percival Steve Harris As the film opens Vidal and Percival are taping yet another episode of their reality TV show which documents workers on the night shift The topic of the show on this fateful eve is the exciting life of firemen Things are running mundane yet smoothly as the audience is introduced to the films film's premise The scenery is bright and cheery Vidal is playful yet professional Everything is right and routine until the firemen get a call that will potentially bring about devastating results The firemen with Vidal and Percival in tow rush to a building and ultimately get locked inside The call they respond to involves an old woman who is seemingly sick It becomes evident that she may actually carry a contagious virus and someone the police 1 I 3 A hd s I Ij I 1 I II II I I A Ri A i rN UA Q-UA R- R E the government Hmm realizes the capacity of her ailment and orders the building tobe to be quarantined The bright images fade in favor of dark light the camera man gets slippery hands and chaos ensues for a g good od hour or m more re Naturally our unlikely heroes are trapped inside as aswell aswell aswell well and vow vo vO v v to document every scream violent attack and any other shocking development until the bitter end Again the horror this film provides is within the thereal thereal thereal real life setting People are filmed closely together The camera scans images with an uneven rhythm Sounds are as regular as they come come come- only come only amplified There are some shocking scenes that probably would have had less power ina in ina a more fictional setting but Quarantine does not provide anything overly original It is fairly prepackaged and unfortunately the fear fizzles out with the films film's progression Quarantine is rated R for language blood and violent images |
