Show HB pushes for immigration enforcement Ani Arakelian i Opinion Editor 1 On Friday Feb 1 the state legislature passed House Bill Illegal Immigration Enforcement Act which would give state and local law enforcement officers Certain function of a federal immigration officer Although there are several I reasons why the bill should be modified if it was where to be become become become come law Rep Glen A. A Donnelson R the sponsor of the bill said in his introduction of the bill that it would have state and local officers be trained to do particular duties of federal immigration officers The state and local officers would be paid for their training but they would receive no pay raise for performing the extra duties The officers should be paid more if they are doing more work Meanwhile the bill could also prevent illegal immigrant who have been victims or witnesses of a crime from coming forward due to the fact that they may be deported Rep David Litvack D brought up the case in which a young girl had been taken and the only witness was an illegal immigrant if this bill was passed then witnesses of future crimes may not come forward It was also brought up that in other state where they have similar law legal immigrants where being detained until they could show proof that they where wherein in the country legally Even with the compelling reasons the legislators legislator's who oppose the bill gave the bill was passed in the House by more then half the votes Illegal immigrants is one of the hottest topics not only in the state but also in inthe inthe inthe the country This year is an election year for the legislature and they want to show they are doing something about illegal immigration yet to pass every bill that has to do with illegal immigration in one year is not going to be best for the state orthe or orthe orthe the illegal and legal immigrants |
