Show Itching for a lynching Anabel Aguilar Writer Next time someone commits a lynching blame it on the suggestions of an anchor That is if it comes from the senseless sports anchor Kelly Tilghman On Friday Jan 4 Tilghman commentator for Golf Channel made a scarring career-scarring comment during the coverage of the US U.S. Tour in Hawaii While discussing with her host co-host Nick Faldo which new young players would be a suitable challenge for the master golfer Tiger Woods Faldo had suggested that the young players would have to gang up on Woods Thinking she could add to the humor Tilghman then replied with Yeah lynch him in a back alley While Tilghman loosely laughed America and crew members of Golf Channel shared this awkward televised moment This is the 21 st Century right Well Vell of course we do live in a different era than that of our grandparents' grandparents time when racial comments and actions were part of Americas America's acceptable polite 1 polite society You You would think that we as v Va a country have already moved on and have made it possible for human beings of different ethnic backgrounds to dwell here herein herem in m peace So what does this reflect on Tilghman It sure makes one wonder what goes on in her head Is she racist Is there more than what accidentally slipped during this widely event Of course both she and the network have publicly apologized to both Woods and viewers whom have been hurt by this mindless remark Expressing ing his concern Reverend Al demanded that Tilghman needed to be fired He also stated Lynching is not murder in general its it's not assault in general its it's a specific racial term that mat this woman should be held accountable for What she said is racist Whether she's a racist is immaterial She's a broadcaster The channel has to be accountable to the public This is supposed to tobe tobe tobe be a high-class high sport so therefore comments should be on an educated level Is it too much to ask Apparently it is permissible Instead of being fired the Wednesday after her racist remark Tilghman was put under suspension for two weeks She will be back just in time for the Jan 24 Buick Invitational Now is this enough Should she have been fired or is this all blown out of proportion If we really want to show how far weve we've come since the Civil Rights Movement justice should have more of a presence According to Golf Channel they did what they believed was necessary when stating the following r J While we believe that Kellys Kelly's choice of words was inadvertent inadvertent and and that she did not intend them in an offensive manner the words were hurtful and grossly inappropriate Consequently we have decided to suspend Kelly for two weeks effective immediately Will Tilghman stay or orwill orwill orwill will she go She does have a year 15 contract regardless of what Golf Channel has recently confirmed Although its it's not quite sure what else will happen common logic shows that even if suspension isn't enough the humiliation that follows will do the trick |
