Show Clean Air Act to be enforced on campus Jeffrey Wall Staff Reporter 0 In a mass email Student Association President Halee Thomsen informed students and staff that the college will start enforcing Utah's Clean Air Act on campus Enforcement of the Clean Air Act will begin on Feb 1 and will target smokers who habitually the foot 25 smoke- smoke smoke within free zones located in front of building entrances as mandated by Utah's Clean Air Act o We are trying to step up the awareness to make sure that everybody is abiding by the Clean Air Act said Shane Crabtree Director of Public Safety Crabtree said that this is just the beginning of a campaign to provide students and staff with the right to breathe clean air to and from their classrooms He also stated that the colleges college's administration understands that people have the right to smoke but smokers need to understand that others also have the right to breathe clean air smoking policy is in accordance with Utah's Clean Air Act which states that Smoking is not permitted within 25 feet of any entranceway exit open window or air intake of a building where smoking is prohibited This campaign is not focused on ticketing smokers but about enforcing the states state's mandated Clean Air Act Im not saying that if you are smoking at the front doors and someone tells you to put out your cigarette or move away from the building that we are going to impose a fine at that point There will be a lot of warnings and we will ask smokers to please step outside the 25 foot radius I hope this works because I would hate to to tell smokers that they cant can't smoke Olf campus said Crabtree Other Utah colleges have or orare orare orare are trying to implement tobacco- tobacco free campuses looked into doing the same last year but didn't have the support of the majority Enforced Continued on AS Clean Air Act Enforced Continued from Alof Al Alof Alof of students we did a Last year survey and the results were didn't want a that students smoke-free smoke campus said Thomsen For now we are how the foot 25 going to see rule is going to work Smokers are in support of enforce the the decision to clean air act on campus and I smoker Im a people blow hate it when smoke in my face when I am not smoking said Mitch Kimrose a student If smokers know that they need to be back away from where people are walking then I think it should be enforced Utah's Clean Air Act foot 25 rule asa as asa asa sets the a general standard but allows individual property managers to adjust the distance to meet their needs with be the case This This' may some of the entrances on campuses Crabtree stated that the north and to the south entrances could have Student Center ti restrictions of up to feet These entrances are covered and notorious for trapping cigarette smoke exposing a large number of students to second-hand second smoke Fines for violating the Clean Air Act on campus been but Thomsen and Crabtree believe fines could start at 10 per violation Similar to parking fines they will automatically increase if they arent aren't paid on time Thomsen said that she has received a lot of emails concerning the placement of ashtrays near entry f 1 doors and that students are concerned that this encourages smoking near entryways In response to these concerns Thomsen said the college will continue to supply these ashtrays I as a way to control waste generated by cigarette butts Placement of these ashtrays is in compliance with the Clean Air Act administration is independently responsible compliance and to assure may be held liable for noncompliance |
